ACMH Poised to Launch:

Community Oriented Recovery & Empowerment Services

Psychosocial Rehabilitation - Empowerment Services/Peer Support - Family Support & Training

Since 2016, ACMH has provided Home & Community Based Services (HCBS) to vulnerable New Yorkers with serious mental illness in the areas of Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Empowerment Services/Peer Supports and Family Support/Training.

On February 1, 2022, these HCBS services are transitioning to a new service array known as Community Oriented Recovery & Empowerment Services (CORE). This new model will offer significant improvements over HCBS by eliminating the many barriers which have prevented client access to services. Through CORE, services will be integrated into existing ACMH housing programs, not only enhancing the supports provided to our tenants, but also allowing for individually tailored and more flexible services to better meet the needs of our diverse client population.

CORE services are available to all Health and Recovery Plan (HARP) enrollees, those clients with the greatest service needs, in an effort to reduce the overutilization of costly emergency services such as repeated emergency room visits and extended hospitalization stays.

“At school, I was constantly bullied by my peers, which caused me to have anxiety around people. I hid behind dark sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled down over my face. My peer counselor took me to various adult learning centers and has encouraged me constantly. I was able to get my GED at age 30. Now I feel hopeful that I can continue my education and I'm in the process of looking for my first job, and feel confident that I can finally be more independent and live on my own.”

- Steven, HCBS Peer Empowerment Support Client

Creative Outlets

Ryer Avenue Artists

Our Ryer Avenue residence in the Bronx has started an art group for our tenants, thanks to Assistant Director Verity Rollins (pictured top left) who paints in his spare time and enjoys leading these weekly groups. These acts of creative expression have allowed tenants a creative outlet to tap into their thoughts and feelings. Staff have encouraged tenants to discuss their artwork to help process their emotions, decrease stress and anxiety, and build on self-awareness. One participant shared that painting every week “means a lot to me and it helps to occupy my mind,” and another tenant added that it “helps me deal with other people” and that it has allowed them “time to think and work with what I’ve got.”

ACMH Staff Profile:

Emereline Vazquez

“I came into this field thinking progress for a client looks like an exponential graph. I have learned that there are so many obstacles a client has to overcome to actually achieve their goals. They don’t always choose these obstacles, and often, failure is part of the process. Persistence is key and making sure clients know that even if they have given up on themselves, we won’t.”

Emereline Vazquez, Director for 74 Avenue A, our transitional community residence in Queens Village, celebrates her 10th year with ACMH this November! She first joined ACMH in 2011 as a Front Desk Clerk and grew with the organization from there. In honor of her tenth year with us, Emereline reflected on her ACMH experiences over the years.

What is your favorite part of working at ACMH and at 74A?
ACMH has the best staff. I’ve met the best people at this agency and it's one of the things I look forward to when I come to work. There’s also a lot of room for growth in this agency, along with very supportive supervisors, which makes the job doable.

Are there any upcoming events/groups/celebrations that you’re looking forward to with clients or other staff at 74A?
I look forward to our potluck, as 74 Avenue A is very diverse. We each get to bring a little something from home and it’s usually a hit every time! Our clients really enjoy the holidays - they get to eat good food, and they enjoy the decorations around the building.

What is one example of positive impact you have had or witnessed while working for ACMH?
Working in mental health has taught me a lot of things. I came into this field thinking progress for a client looks like an exponential graph. I have learned that there are so many obstacles a client has to overcome to actually achieve their goals. They don’t always choose these obstacles, and often, failure is part of the process. Persistence is key and making sure clients know that even if they have given up on themselves, we won’t.

The holidays are around the corner, can you assist to make them brighter for our clients and staff?
