NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Delta is ironically the symbol for change.  While we’re all still reeling from the COVID-19 Delta Variant, we should take this opportunity to turn this symbol around and reexamine it from a positive prism.  Delta = change.  Change is scary.  Change is something many avoid.  But, change can be good.  Take a look at the past 18 months.  How have you changed?  You’ve likely become more resilient.  You’ve likely learned more about science and microbiology than you’d ever cared to know.  You’ve learned to adapt in new and novel ways.  You’ve grown as an individual and – yes, changed!

John Lennon famously said, “Life is what happens while you’re making plans.”  And, while we all make plans on what a return to work post-pandemic would be like, rather than be startled at the where we have landed, it might be most productive to reflect back on the journey.  How have you changed and evolved? What skills have you gained?  And, what unexpected pathways have you taken?  Novelist Neil Gaiman is renown for his tales of fantasy and magical worlds.  But, his stories are often inconclusive, intentionally so, encouraging the reader to delight in the journey experienced. In a similar way, the journey to today has been where your personal growth can be highlighted.  Take a moment and reflect on the pathways that led you today.  From there, you can peer toward tomorrow and anticipate how your future journey will continue to change you.

This month’s newsletter focuses on elements of change.  As ever, it is incumbent on you to make that change.  AMG is pleased to offer the resources needed. But, first, the road must be paved by you.

HYBRID WORKPLACE CHANGES

by Grace Fransisca

With campus reopening, many staff are now working in a hybrid model and are now trying to maneuver this new environment after fully working from home. The shift to having two different workspaces can bring about new challenges. How can we continue to keep up momentum and productivity between locations? How do we stay organized and ensure that everything we need is available at all times in both locations?

Above are three tips I find to be useful in hybrid work to maximize productivity.

5 TIPS FOR MAKING A CAREER PIVOT
By Carla Gonzalez

Anesthesiology resident Cecilia Canales, MD, MPH, credits her agility when she considers the opportunities that have shaped her career. She’s gone from administrative roles in research to now pursuing a career in medicine, which is not common in her community. Dr. Canales is proud of her upbringing and the risks she took throughout her career.

Her work at UCLA’s Simulation Center soon led to a supervisory position. A few years later, she accepted a directorial position at UC Irvine. While the positions she held were respected and well-compensated, Dr. Canales felt like she needed to pivot, “I wanted to affect change in a different way.”

She has made many tough calls along her journey. While considering her family’s financial constraints and her own work/life balance, Dr. Canales says, “Success is not a title; it’s fulfillment.”

Today, Dr. Canales remains involved in various projects during her residency in Anesthesiology, including leading research in Spanish-speaking patients to address post-surgical cognitive outcomes after hip surgery at UCLA Santa Monica. This cause is particularly important to Dr. Canales because it allows her to focus on an underrepresented demographic. Pivoting her career was both financially and personally challenging, but being able to serve this community makes it all worth it for her.

Dr. Canales shares with AMG some tips on pivoting your career:
  • Capitalize on opportunities. Ask questions and learn about the subject matter from meetings you attend. Take advantage of the learning opportunities around you.
  • Don’t be afraid to fail. Every leap of faith may end in failure. Leap anyway. They always lead to new and exciting opportunities.
  • Market yourself. In the virtual world, there are plenty of ways to network and establish collaborations. Highlight your accomplishments and share your desire to learn more.
  • Make tough calls. Making difficult decisions is part of every job. Absorb information and develop the appropriate response. Sleep on it, look at it from various angles, then make your decision.
  • Define your version of success. Figure out what success means to you. To Dr. Canales, success means being able to take care of your family and helping others to succeed.
