CCHS Newsletter 35 - 18th October 2021
Weekly Message from Mr Harding, Executive Head Teacher
As we look forward to the last week of a long half term there is a real sense of having ticked off a number of significant milestones.
We have had our Open evening (albeit a reduced one) with the welcome return of a limited number of parents in the building as well as our Year 9 Settling In evening, providing parents with the opportunity to tour the school in a way that they missed out on last year due to the pandemic.
We have had our first lot of flu vaccinations delivered by the health team this week and look forward to the CoVid vaccination team visiting us in November when we return from the half term break. Both of these have been organised by the NHS and we have been happy to accommodate them in our school.
Finally, we have had a number of field courses and trips out over the last few weeks, both rock climbing and Geography fieldwork at Carding Mill Valley were both welcome indicators of students benign able to experience a wide and diverse curriculum. As ever, I'm very grateful to the staff that have taken the time and effort to organise them.

GCSE Rock Climbing
Last week, 17 Year 11 GCSE PE students attended Boundless Outdoors in Malvern with Mr Horsfield and Miss Guest.  They completed an intensive three day / two night rock climbing course as part of their practical assessment.  The students worked incredibly hard and managed to achieve some very high climbing grades.
Well done!

Geography Field Trip - Carding Mill Valley
On Monday and Wednesday last week, Y10 geography students visited Carding Mill Valley as part of their GCSE curriculum.  In geography, students must complete two field work trips, one based around physical geography and one around human geography.
For this piece of field work, the students conducted a small river study to look at how the river channel characteristics change as a river flows from source to mouth.  The River Ashbrooke that flows through the valley, though small, provides a wonderful example of some of the changes that start to occur as the river leaves it's source and has an easily identifiable upper, middle and lower course sections.
The students study a total of four sites and take measurements including, depth and width of the channel and collect other useful information such as velocity.
The weather was absolutely superb and the students on Monday's trip got lucky enough to see a wild pony and her foal!
Year 11 Netball
The Year 11 netball team made an excellent start to the season in the matches last week against The Friary School and Chase Terrace Academy.  The girls confidently beat Friary and narrowly lost by just one goal to Chase Terrace.
The team's nominated play of the night was Jasmin Shiramba.
Well done girls!

Have your circumstances changed recently?
Parents claiming some benefits can claim free school meals for any of their children who are registered at a Staffordshire school and who would normally be at school at lunch time. School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime and you can save yourself time and money.

Even if you don't want your children to have the meals, claiming them helps their school. The more eligible parents who claim meals, the more funding the school receives.
