ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 6TH October, at 7.30 on Zoom
We held our AGM on Zoom again this year but this time it was chaired by Pam from Thargomindah in western Queensland from her AVan.
Reports were presented and accepted then the committee was re-elected.
Here is Pam’s introduction to John Taylor, our guest speaker.
John works in IT at Strathcona Girls School. He is a very keen geocacher and he currently runs the South Surrey Park Geocache.
I worked with John Taylor over the 16 years I was working at Strathcona. In that time, and since leaving, I have discovered he has an amazing diversity of interests. He helped me set up the first geocache in SSP. Something he now runs himself. He is actively involved with the City of Whitehorse’s Garden’s for Wildlife were he went along to discover what the program is about and now gives advice on creating an indigenous garden -Pam Welsford
John spoke on making your backyard wildlife friendly. Starting in 2015 he had done this with his own garden and has noted a tenfold increase in birds.
His suggested that we have several containers of water in the garden, both high and low, for the birds and insects. He told us how to make a bee hotel by drilling extra long holes in a log with drill bit no wider than 6 mls and no smaller than 3 mls to cater for different types of bee. He has had bees in his for two years now. Another good idea to help smaller birds was to build a habitat tripod. This has plants growing around it so that the birds can find shelter. Flowering in the park this month - pelargonium australe
we have some very vigorous
pelargonium australe in the park. They are flowering at the moment and looking very attractive.
Maggie found one which had been badly damaged by someone so she gathered up the pieces and took them home. She has planted them in pots and they have taken root really well.
