The Word About Town
Issue 33, October 2021
Welcome
We have made it to October half-term!  Yes, there has been a lot of illness around and many children have had time off from school as a result, but life has also felt pretty good and almost normal at other times, hopefully it has for you too!  So, let’s look forward to a fantastic half-term break and the exciting half term that comes after it – if we’re all really lucky there will be a return to enjoying Nativities, School Plays, Carol Concerts and so much more!  We are all guilty of taking so many of the little things for granted but have come to realise that we really missed all the school events where we get to watch our children growing up and, with a number of the MGT children having birthdays this month, we are realising how quickly they do grow.  So, get out there if you can and make the most of all the ‘normal’ opportunities on offer!  We can start you off with details of half-term and Halloween happenings and fantastic fireworks fun!   Read on...

Half-Term Highlights
music.jpg
This half term there is so much going on!  If you like filling all your time, or even just some of your time, with fun and new adventures - we have the events you are looking for on our What's On page!

For some children half-term starts at the end of this week.  Even if it doesn’t, you can still make the most of the Grand Opening of the new Eric Morecombe Centre this Saturday (16th).  There are tours on offer as well as workshops to involve the children and all the family – think Circus Skills, Panto Dance and an Evening Showcase.  And talking of the Circus, Le Cirque De France is in Redbourn until Sunday (17th).

When half-term starts for all there are some lovely local events on if you don't want to venture too far.  Batford Springs Half Term Trail will keep your little ones busy in the open air.  Then carve yourselves some pumpkins at Rothamsted Pumpkin Week.  If you fancy something creative but a bit longer lasting than a pumpkin, try Half Term Pottery Painting with Glaze Time (Tuesday 26th in Wheathampstead and Wednesday 27th October in Harpenden).  For a bit of indoor entertainment on Thursday 28th Oct there is a brand new interactive theatre show for families arriving in Harpenden Library  – Book Sleuths in a Bind: A Very Puzzling Case.   And for some seasonal trails try the Redbourn Pumpkin Trail from Fri 29th to Sun 31st Oct, the St Dominic Schools' Haunted Wood Trail Harpenden  or Grove Schools' Halloween Trail and Fun on the Field, both on Sun 31st Oct.  Harpenden Lions have also organised a Halloween Ghost Trail running now until 5th November, which sounds like it might suit those with older children.

Heading further afield many of our old favourites are backSpook Fest at at Aldenham Country Park; Zoorassic Park at Whipsnade Zoo; Samhain Celebrations at Celtic Harmony Camp; Halloween at Hatfield House; Pick Your Own Pumpkins at Herrings Green Activity FarmThe Popup Farm at Junction 9 of the M1, or as part of the Pumpkin Festival at Willows Activity Farm.

If you are looking for a Halloween Trail you are spoiled for choice!   In addition to the ones above you could try the Toil and Trouble Halloween Activity Trail at Jordans Mill, Knebworth Gardens Halloween TrailThe Cryptid Safari Halloween Trail at Waddesdon Manor, October Half Term Trail at Ashridge Estate, October Half Term Trail at Dunstable Downs, and finally a new one - The Wizards of Once Halloween Quest at Wrest Park inspired by Cressida Cowell’s bestselling series.

If Halloween isn't your thing there are plenty of other options on offer.  Two of our favourites are a Day out with Thomas at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and Dinos After Dark at Paradise Wildlife Park.

We could go on and on, but you get the idea - there is loads happening and to find out about it all you need to check out our What's On Page!
Fireworks Fun!

After a year off I think we are all ready to ooooh and ahhhh again at some of those spectacular fireworks that light up the skies on and around 5th November!

Crabtree Schools' PTA Fireworks will be back with a bang on Saturday 6th November, as will the St Albans Fireworks Spectacular, and the Redbourn Fireworks Display.  Also on that day Mead Open Farm will be having their Farm Fun & Fireworks Spectacular

For fireworks on Sunday 7th November head to Wheathampstead Fireworks at Beech Hyde School or the Fireworks Spectacular at Harpenden Rugby Club.

Unfortunately the Low Bang Fireworks Festival at Willows Activity Farm is already sold out.  If we hear that anything changes we will let you know via Social Media.
Children's activities, holiday clubs & parties!

After a long and difficult time many of our favourite baby and children's activity providers and party providers are back!  Our kids have missed them and so have we!  We regularly update our listings to reflect changes and there have certainly been a lot over the last 18 months or so.  But things are definitely getting back to normal and even most of our local baby and toddler groups have made a come back now!

If you are looking for somewhere to take your baby or toddler don't forget to check out our Under-5s drop-ins / Pay As You Go classes.  They really can be a life saver for those last minute decisions when you need to get out but have nothing planned!  They are all set out carefully by day so you can find exactly what you need at the click of a button.  Find them on our Under 5s drop-ins/PAYG by day page - bookmark it now, before you forget! Our Parent & Toddler Playgroups page can be a lifesaver as well.   Or, if you're far more organised and like to have baby/toddler groups booked in for the term take a look at our Under-5s Classes.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for regular activities for your school age children you and they have a lot of choice!  Take your pick from arts/crafts, dance, drama & musical theatre, Guides, Scouts & uniformed groups, language classes, music, youth clubs, sport & fitness, additional needs and so much more!  All are found on our Children's Acivity Clubs & Classes page and activities can be searched by keywords or even age!

If you need activities for the children during school holidays check out our Holiday Clubs & Classes page.

And finally, parties are back!!!  Find those mobile entertainers & activity providers, halls, function rooms & other venues, party supplies and cakes, food & catering in our Parties section.  We think we all deserve a good party, don't you?!
The Final Word
We have managed to avoid too much mention of Christmas thus far, but we can't help it - we love Christmas and are going to mention it here!  Plus we all know that Father Christmas experiences can book up  far in advance, so check out our Where To See Santa 2021 article now so you don't miss out.

Last year, during lockdown, Carol also spent a lot of time researching and discovering all the local shopping opportunities right on our doorsteps.  We were blown away with the sheer number of entrepreneurs, the creativity and the talent of Harpenden and the surrounding villages.  Her article 'Keeping Christmas Shopping Local' is still relevant this year and she will be regularly updating it - so if you are local and sell gifts suitable for Christmas do get in touch and she'll get you added in!

Happy Celebrating!
