Ministerial Reception at the Institute of Directors
I was fortunate to be invited to attend a Ministerial reception on the 11 October, hosted by Kwasi Kwarteng MP the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Paul Scully MP, The Minister for London and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Small Business, Consumers and Labour Markets.

Those attending came from all walks of the business world, both large companies/businesses and small businesses alike.

The short keynote speech delivered by Kwasi Kwarteng was based upon his thanks to the business world for the support and proactive approach they had taken throughout the incredibly difficult times posed by the pandemic, and to assure those present that the Government was the Government for business.

I met individually with him very briefly and he seemed very sincere in trying to deal with all the many issues he and the Government are facing, not least the worrying times for commercial businesses facing a huge increase in their energy costs.

Talking with Paul Scully, I was anxious to get a feel from him as to if the relatively new ‘Personal Care’ department within BEIS (The Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy) would continue post pandemic, as this new department had already made some huge strides in supporting our sector. Thankfully his answer was in the positive, as such it gives our sector an even stronger link with Government in the future and one I will continue to work closely with.

In addition, I met with many other various industry leaders, listened to the struggles they had throughout the pandemic, and how they were attempting to overcome them and made some useful contacts, one being the Federation of Small Business, who I will be working with closely in the months ahead.

All Party Parliamentary Group for Hairdressing, Barbering and Cosmetology (APPG)

What is an APPG?
All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal, cross-party groups formed by MPs and Members of the House of Lords who share a common interest in a particular policy area, region, or country.
While they are not official parliamentary committees these groups can sometimes be influential because of their non-partisan, bicameral approach to an issue. It is a particular sectors route to MPs and the Government and is used to discuss and inform MPs on the various wants, needs and concerns of any given sector.

The APPG for Hairdressing, Barbering and Cosmetology, is the ONLY APPG in Westminster representing the Hair and Barber sector and  is a critical link in the work of the Hair and Barber Council with Government.

Chair is Christina Rees MP who is a passionate advocate of our industry gaining mandatory registration and has pledged to do all that she can to work together with the Hair and Barber Council to achieve that aim. This APPG is a major influencer of the Hair and Barber Industry and as such is an extremely valuable group to maintain.
