Research

The Importance of Nurse Well-being and How to Achieve It
"Giving attention to well-being is a challenge for many nurses. Nurses’ professional focus on others; personal roles in the care of children, older adults, or close friends; physical exhaustion from working shifts; and lack of time are all factors that contribute to this challenge. At the same time, attention to nurse well-being is essential to patient safety1  and the future of the profession..."
The Science of Health Care Worker Burnout: Assessing and Improving Health Care Worker Well-Being
"The research comprised four workstreams: literature review (WS1), qualitative study (WS2), intervention development and implementation (WS3) and evaluation (WS4). Due to time constraints, we employed a parallel design for WS1–3 with the findings of WS1–2 informing WS3 on a continual basis. WS3 was underpinned by the Behaviour Change Wheel. We recruited expert panels to assist with intervention development. We reflected on decisions taken to facilitate the rapid yet rigorous process of intervention development. The empirical output was a theoretically informed and evidence-based intervention strategy to underpin interventions to support doctors' well-being during COVID-19 and beyond. The methodological output was a novel framework that facilitates rapid and rigorous development of interventions. The intervention strategy provides a foundation for development and evaluation of tailored interventions to support doctors' well-being. The novel framework provides guidance for the development of interventions where the situation demands a rapid yet rigorous development process..."
Nurses' Intent to Leave their Position and the Profession During the COVID-19 Pandemic
"Peer review articles as well as multiple large data sets collected within our own research team are used to describe the nature of burnout, associations with institutional resources, and individual tools to improve well-being... Rates of HCW burnout are alarmingly high, placing the health and safety of patients and HCWs at risk. To help address the urgent need to help HCWs, we summarize some of the most promising early interventions, and point toward future research that uses standardized metrics to evaluate interventions (with a focus on low-cost institutional and personal interventions)..."
Quality improvement in practice—part two: applying the joy in work framework to healthcare
"This article, the second in a three-part series on the practical application of quality improvement in healthcare, presents four case studies that demonstrate the learning from four healthcare systems that have been applying both quality improvement and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's ‘joy in work’ framework to enhance staff wellbeing and experience. These case studies demonstrate the benefits of involving staff deeply in the process of understanding factors that impact on experience at work, developing and testing creative ideas that can make a difference. The ideas that emerged were diverse and highly contextualised to the local service. Ideas related most strongly to four areas: wellness and resilience, daily improvement, camaraderie and teamwork, and recognition and reward. The systematic approach that quality improvement brings is potentially replicable across all healthcare settings, and can provide a way for all teams to have greater ownership and control over their wellbeing and experience at work..."
Employee Energy and Engagement: Keys to Clinician and Organization Well-Being in a Crisis
"Well-being, engagement, and burnout among clinicians are interconnected, and the common denominator is energy. Decades of research show that employees’ energy is a decisive factor in achieving organizational outcomes. Knowing this, healthcare leaders can create well-being programs with measurable outcomes that make a positive impact on the bottom line. Just as important, leaders can avoid wasting money on fruitless efforts. How can clinician well-being be incorporated in organizational culture and strategic and operational plans? What are the special challenges to achieving clinician well-being? What key leadership actions promote and protect the well-being of clinicians? Which approaches are most effective during a crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic? This article addresses those questions by presenting the rationale and methodology behind well-being programs that also address engagement and burnout so that clinicians can succeed in times of crisis and beyond..."
New graduate nurse wellbeing, work wellbeing and mental health: A quantitative systematic review
"Thirty-four studies were included. The quality of the evidence was variable with just a quarter of the studies being assessed as meeting the quality criteria on all nine measures. For the new graduate nurses prevalence of wellbeing, levels of resilience, optimism, and hope were found to be high. For work wellbeing, most reported higher job satisfaction by 12-months. For work illbeing, levels of burnout were moderately high, predominantly in terms of emotional exhaustion, and stress was initially high, particularly in terms of workload, but decreased over time. For the predictors, job satisfaction was positively predicted by structural empowerment and career satisfaction, and negatively predicted by co-worker incivility, supervisor incivility and emotional exhaustion. For work illbeing, stress was a positive predictor for intent to leave. Stress reductions were associated with momentary levels of high task mastery, social acceptance and role clarity..."
