ABE Massachusetts Newsletter | October 2021
Happy October to all of our ABE Massachusetts Educators!

The ABE MA Team would also like to take this time to acknowledge that the land we are on is the original homelands of the Mashpee Wampanoag, Aquinnah Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Massachusett tribal nations.
We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live.

ABE MA Teacher, Stacey Chapley, from Frontier Regional High School, has been awarded the 2021 Champion Teacher - Henri A. Termeer Educator Award from MassBioEd! Please join us in congratulating Stacey on this well-deserved award!

Teachers can attend MassBioEd's 20th Anniversary Celebration, Honoring Champions of Biotechnology Education, for free virtually! The event is on October 26th from 5:30 - 8:00 PM.

Here we will highlight articles and resources from Nature Briefing. You can sign up for their daily newsletter here. It's a great way to stay current on what's going on in science news (plus they state how long each piece takes to go through or interact with).  

This Month's Pick: Nanotech virus-hunters target SARS-CoV-2

Drug makers are looking to nanotechnology for new ways to tackle viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Antiviral nanomaterials can encapsulate viruses in origami cages, mop them up with nanosponges, and target the lipid membrane surrounding enveloped virus particles. Researchers’ aspirations go beyond the key part that nanomaterials have already played in the fight against SARS-CoV-2: the Pfizer–BioNtech and Moderna vaccines both rely on lipid nanoparticles to carry messenger RNA into cells.

MCB and OEB faculty Cassandra Extavour is one of the 33 distinguished scientists to be named as a 2021 HHMI Investigator. The prestigious award, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), provides HHMI Investigators a minimum of $9 million in research funding over a period of 7 years, with the option of subsequent renewals.

Award, Fellowship, and Grant Opportunities
Grants for Empowering Teachers (GET)

As a benefit to membership, the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST) has established the GET opportunity for educators (formal and informal) to purchase non-consumable items that engage and enrich student learning.

This grant opportunity is open to all MAST members. You must be a current MAST member to apply. Every year five $200 awards will be presented to applicants who demonstrate the use/value of a particular item for their students and science education.

Elaine Adams Professional Development Grant

All current members of the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST) are eligible to apply for the Elaine Adams Professional Development Grant, established in memory of Elaine Adams, chemistry teacher at Phillips Academy and one of the four founders of the former Science Teachers Area Resource Swap (STARS).

Each year one $500 award will be presented to an applicant who proposes pursuing a professional development venture that is interesting and new for themselves and that has the potential to be of use/value for their students and science education. Recipients are expected to present a workshop at an upcoming MAST Conference. Prior winners may apply again however new awardees will be given priority over previous winners.

The Laboratory Robotics Interest Group of New England (LRIG-NE) is providing up to $2,500 will be awarded to those science, technology, engineering, and math teachers in secondary schools throughout New England who best meet the criteria below. The objective of these grants is to provide funds to expand project-based activities in educational settings.
