NOVEMBER 2021

According to Wikipedia, Stick Season is “a term used in the U.S. state of Vermont for the transition between fall and winter, after the leaves have fallen and before snow has settled on the trees.”  A perfect term for this month of darkening days and symbolic of Vermont’s distinctive setting.  Our programs this month embrace this uniqueness, featuring a book talk with David Holmes about his new local history, On Being a Vermonter and the Rise and Fall of the Holmes Farms, 1822-1923, as well as our celebration of Agricultural Literacy Week, November 15-21, focusing on land connections.  We are also offering locally-sourced take and make kits, and some seasonal story times on the library porch.  Bring your hat and mittens if you plan to attend the latter!  Other traditions, old and new, that continue include the Friends of the Library Book Sale, now running through the end of the month, and the second annual Friends Quilt Raffle.

In the words of another Stick Season enthusiast, “The first step in embracing this time of year is mulling items. Not mulling ideas, mind you, but cider, wine, glogg, those sorts of mullables…”  The next step is finding a good book to read with your mulled item. A food, farm, or gardening book by a Vermont author would be particularly appropriate.”  We would argue that any book you enjoy is appropriate for Stick Season and hope you’ll find one in the list below.  While you’re at the library, pick up a mulled cider spice packet to go with your reading.  In the meantime, enjoy our local landscape and be well.

Stick Season Reminder:  Check your firewood!  You can borrow a moisture meter from the library to make sure your wood burns safely and cleanly.  Learn more.

November’s Art Exhibit: "Of Land and Sea"

Watercolors by local artist Barbara Lane
Lane, a self-taught watercolor artist, began painting whenever she had the time between raising a family and a busy career as a surgical nurse.  Now, at the wonderful age of 92, Lane is still painting at her home in Whiting, Vermont.  This exhibit represents both some of the reflections from time spent on the rocky coast of Maine and also Lane's love of the Vermont landscape.  Lane's work is reminiscent of works by Andrew Wyeth, Tom Lynch, Arthurs Healy, and Sumi Art.
For more information contact Brenda Myrick at brendamyrickart@gmail.com. To purchase prints by Lane visit http://www.brendamyrickart.com and take advantage of the 20 % off sale going on now.

Book Talk: "On Being a Vermonter and the Rise and Fall of the Holmes Farm 1822-1923"

Tuesday, November 2
7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
David Holmes, author of On Being a Vermonter and the Rise and Fall of the Holmes Farm, 1822-1923, will discuss this new book, just published by the Center for Research on Vermont and the White River Press.

The multi-generation Holmes farm was located on Lake Champlain just south of the Holmes Covered Bridge in Charlotte and featured one of New England's largest apple orchards and the breeding and racing of Morgan horses. The farm ended with foreclosure after 101 years of existence. The book is the only case study of a Vermont farm over this span of time and reflects an important chapter of Vermont and Charlotte history.

The presentation will provide insights into the founding of the farm, life on the farm and in Charlotte, and the challenges and stresses that led to its demise in 1923. Rare photographs from the early 1900s are included in the presentation. Registration required for Zoom link.

Agricultural Literacy Week

November 15-21
Agricultural Literacy Week, hosted by NOFA-VT and the Vermont Department of Libraries, offers programming to highlight and celebrate local farms & the food system. This year’s theme is Land Connections.  Join NOFA-VT online on November 17 for a virtual song & story celebration of land connections with Joseph Bruchac and Jesse Bowman Bruchac.  At the Charlotte Library, we celebrate these connections by highlighting the work of our Seed Library coordinators, who make available local and heirloom seeds for our community to grow and enjoy.  In addition, we showcase the “Seeds of Food Sovereignty” project coordinated by the Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe.  Sign up to learn more about the Abenaki Land Link project at a virtual discussion with tribal leaders and supporters on November 18. You can find details about both of these events on the NOFA-VT Agriculture Literacy Week calendar.
More information about the Land Link “Seeds of Sovereignty” project can be found in this article from Seven Days.
