Welcome to Oh Scrap! from Diane Harris at Stash Bandit:
Tips and tricks for better scrappy quilts!
Tiny Baubles by Diane Harris: Red and green!
I made this quilt before I knew you could combine lots of different greens with fire engine reds for great results. I kept all the greens and the reds very narrow in scope. Now this quilt feels boring to me.
Red and green are nice for Christmas quilts but they're just the beginning. There are so many other possibilities!
As I was moving the Jingle Bells Trunk Show from my car to the house last week, I noticed the variety of colors in the quilts. Christmas quilts can be so much more than red and green!
Figgy Pudding, made by Diane Harris.
Who could have imagined a Christmas quilt with Hershey's chocolate brown as its background? Figgy Pudding was a Moda fabric line and the name of the quilt design above. I fell in love with it, I made it, and it pulled me beyond red and green.
When I designed Very Merry for McCall's Quick Quilts, above, I learned that aqua and teal, or what you might call blue-green, is a great addition to red and green. It livens everything up!
I liked the effect of the aqua so much that I did it again for my Christmas Chevrons quilt. Click the image for complimentary instructions to make this quilt.
And do you see what else I added?
Navy blue!
Navy blue has become another Christmas tradition for me.
It does wonders for a Christmas color recipe.
The Panic Quilt, designed and made by Diane Harris.
Another unlikely color that I love
in holiday quilts is BLACK!
The Panic Quilt just above is one I made quickly when I was worried about having enough Christmas quilts for the Jingle Bells Trunk Show. Several fabric designers had added black to their Christmas lines and I loved it. It helped the other colors sparkle!
And in my latest scrappy adventure, I added orange to a Christmas color scheme. It is going to be so much fun!
Prancer's Peppermints is another of my Christmas quilt designs. Isn't that navy blue the best?! Photo courtesy of Quiltmaker.
Best wishes as you try colors beyond red and green in your holiday sewing this year!
I know you can do it!
I was pleasantly surprised to learn recently that my quilt "Big Cheese" is on the cover of the newest Quiltmania (Sept/Oct '21). It is so named because of all the cheddar-colored fabric. Didn't Quiltmania style it beautifully? 😊And more good news: This quilt is not difficult to sew!
I'm booking programs and classes for 2022 and 2023 now and most engagements will be virtual. I'd love to visit your quilt group via Zoom! Consider booking a virtual trunk show and class: Avoid winter travel disruptions or save your guild hundreds in expenses. Everybody wins!
