Khronos Prepares glTF 2.0 for Submission for Transposition to an International Standard

glTF logoKhronos was approved as an ISO/IEC JTC 1 PAS Submitter in May 2021. ISO/IEC JTC 1 is the premier body for International Standards in Information Technology. JTC 1 standards are among the most universally recognized and accepted throughout the world.

The first specification that Khronos will submit for transposition to an International Standard is glTF. As a step in this process, Khronos released a new canonical glTF 2.0.0 specification. If the transposition ballot at JTC 1 succeeds, glTF 2.0.0 will become a JTC 1 International Standard sometime in 2022.

The new specification does not introduce technical changes that will directly impact existing tools and engines, but it does align glTF with the rigorous document quality criteria needed to be accepted as an International Standard.

Will LiDAR Break the 3D Asset Creation Bottleneck?

The creation of 3D assets still requires highly skilled technicians and artists, presenting a bottleneck to more widespread applications, such as creating 3D graphics for websites and E-Commerce. That bottleneck might just be about to break with the advent of mass market LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging). New cell phones contain LiDAR, putting this technology in the average user’s pocket. The LiDAR capabilities in consumer devices may not seem capable of capture for professional applications now, but just wait. The first cell phone cameras were rudimentary compared to the high quality digital cameras available at the time; now, it can be difficult to distinguish between the photographs taken by a smartphone and a DSLR. We can expect the same for phone-based LiDAR. What was once a $75,000 technology will be available to the masses.

Creating Portable Vulkan Applications Using DevSim

LunarG LogoThe validation layer assists developers in checking their code for improper use of Vulkan, but these checks take into account only the limits of the test platform. To ensure an application properly handles multiple platforms, these checks must be run on all platforms of interest to the developer. Combinations of GPUs, ICDs, drivers, and operating systems to name a few factors create an exponential number of possible test platforms, which is infeasible for a developer to obtain and maintain.

The Device Simulation Layer (also called Devsim) seeks to mitigate this obstacle by providing a method to simulate arbitrary property, feature, and limit combinations representing different platforms for specific test cases. For example, it can be configured as though the application is running on a device with the minimum properties, features, and limits defined by the Vulkan specification.

An End-to-End Guide to Photogrammetry with Mobile Devices

glTF LogoIn a recent Khronos blog on consumer-accessible LiDAR, Sandy Ressler of NIST wrote, “The capture of 3D objects…will be yet another technique to supplement our existing toolbox of memory recorders.” In an article published the same week, the New York Times agreed, writing “Constructing 3D models with photogrammetry allows journalists to share objects and environments with their audiences in a comprehensive, immersive way that can’t be achieved with photography or videography alone.”

The New York Times has released a set of guides to the capture, processing, and web delivery of 3D scenes, developed by their R&D department using a variety of tools, many in open source. They also leverage Khronos standards such as glTF with BasisU and Draco compression for publishing interactive 3D models on the Web. The products and technologies of many Khronos partners and members are also used, including Cesium’s 3D Tiles, an OGC standard based on glTF to stream large 3D models. Explore these guides to capturing images for photogrammetry using mobile devices, processing and aligning 3D scenes, and web delivery.
