Weekly Update

Scripture of the Week

Romans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Why We Pray

Have you ever had a conversation that did not go as you planned it to?  Were you blindsided by someone's response?  These difficult conversations often prevent us from fully exposing ourselves in the future while being fully honest with those around us for fear of a bad outcome.

Oddly enough, we can discover that God doesn't always respond the way that we wish He would, or give us the answers we hoped for.  This is because we were praying with the wrong expectations (James 4:6).  We all have done it and had to reconcile that we have a loving Father who didn't give us everything we asked for.  If this creates judgment, bitterness, or isolation from God, we have believed the wrong things about Him.

Prayer is supposed to be a conversation with God.  We can adore Him, confess our sin, give thanks for His goodness in our lives, and ask for the things we need (Psalm 18:6).  If we don't come to also listen to what the Lord is saying, we will experience more frustration in prayer than God ever intended.

A healthy prayer life requires that we surrender our will.  When we pray, we are reminded to ask for His will to be done (Matthew 6:10).  He embeds His Spirit in us for the express purpose of aligning our hearts with His (Romans 8:26).  As we mature in Christ, we willingly lay down our ambition for the sake of His will and radical obedience to His voice as Jesus did (Matthew 26:29).

We pray to know God, to be heard by Him, and to hear Him.  He loves to hear what is on your mind and heart.  He loves to tell you what is on His mind and heart (John 10:27).  This process is transformative.

When we attach disappointment to our own desires, we falsely put the blame on a loving Father, who always does what is best for us, even when we don't understand it.  His will is clear and can be found in scripture (2 Timothy 3:16). His heart is for you and He gave His Son for this very purpose so that we might intimately know Him (1 John 4:12-16).

We pray to know Him, to let Him transform us, to invite God into our lives, hopes, and dreams, and then let Him shape us.
