World Food Day was founded by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Quebec City in 1945.  It is observed in more than 150 countries as a way to raise awareness about hunger.

Some Thoughts & Facts on Food & Food Justice:

• Food is a basic human right, but must be diverse food which is nutritious, affordable and accessible.
• More than half of the food needs to all humanity is met by just 4 crops:  corn – wheat – rice – potatoes:  without diversity there is a real danger of devastating blights.
• Food not only nourishes our bodies, but also creates a complex network of intricate global relationships between growers, processors and distributors – which in turn leads to subsequent issues of equality and injustice.
We must learn to ask, "Who suffers in order for food to fill our stomachs?"
• The production, transportation and distribution of our food can lead to exploitation and oppression of those workers involved in putting food on our plates.
i.e. thru unfair wages or mistreatment, or unsafe working conditions
• Every bite we eat is connected to the land, water and sun – raising question of our stewardship and sacred trust with the land: are we protecting or exploiting these resources?
• Problems of hunger in Canada are not because of lack of food – they are linked to poor distribution (i.e. in the North) or social injustice (poverty and high cost of living leaves little money for groceries) – so food banks have become permanent fixtures, even in our small rural communities around Chatham-Kent.
• St. Augustine said: “Charity is no substitute for justice withheld”
• World Food Day: Think about what’s on our plate and what goes into our mouths, but also think about how it got there. At what cost – to the workers? To the land? to the environment?
• Our role? Become better consumers – informed, conscientious –use buying power wisely, and consume carefully.
A Prayer for World Food Day...

O Creator, you have made the earth so that all may share in its yield and have abundant life.  Among your gifts to your people are the soil and water, and the means to sow and to reap.  You plant in your people seeds of compassion, so they may share the earth's bounty with those in need. You keep us mindful that all people have a right to food and to the means to produce it.  Help us to share the fruits of our own land, but also to question the structures and patterns that contribute to poverty and food insecurity.  Help us to give generously and to seek justice.

With gratitude, with faith, and with hope, we lift our prayers and concerns to you as have disciples through every generation in these words:  "Our Father who art in heaven…."
Make a Difference...

Those of us in the parish who, this past Sunday, used the Canadian Foodgrains Bank World Food Day 2021 worship resource, made available to us by the diocesan PWRDF committee, were inspired to take part in the action item at the end.

That is this:
To take quick and meaningful action before the October 31 - November 12 United Nations Conference of Parties (COP) Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow to remind our leaders that all people should have regular access to enough nutritious food to live healthy and active lives. One important way to work towards this is to ensure that Canada increases support to help small-scale food producers* adapt to climate change and build more resilient food systems.

Join us in speaking out for our global neighbours by sending a letter to your member of Parliament.
It's easy! Just personalize the letter at foodgrainsbank.ca/online-letter and send it!

We just had an election, so if you are unsure who your MP is, you can find out at https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en by entering your postal code.

Thanks for your help! The more of us who write, the bigger our voice!

*Most of the 768 million people who experience hunger globally are small-scale food producers. Once in a safer (safer from climate change and conflict) and more stable environment, agriculture and livelihood projects help people to recover and get back to producing food. Training, tools and support help food producers to increase their harvests, save money, store seeds and food for the future and hopefully be more resilient to the challenges that lie ahead.

New Learning Series...
The proposed next parish study series is titled The Death of a Christian: Death and Dying in the Life of the Church

We will learn about the ministry of the Church at the time of death, as well as hear from the experts among us about the care provided by funeral homes. We will also share our experiences of things like pastoral visits, hospice care, etc. We will hear from one another what has helped, what did not help, and what we wished for, and what we hope for. Most of all it will be a time when we can speak openly about these important things which can be hard to talk about, how we have experienced God's grace in times of death, and find healing in our shared faith and love.

The series will run Monday nights at 7 pm from October 18 to November 15, with a break on November 1 so that we can attend the mapping workshop (see below).

Join us Monday evenings at 7pm on Zoom, beginning Oct 18.  (Zoom Link shown above)
