Our very specials guests this year are Sharon Thira and Emily Chan of the British Columbia's Office of Human Rights Commissioner.

Sharon (she/they) thinks about balance every day. For her, human rights do not exist without human responsibilities; just as individuals do not exist without their families and communities. Sharon studied genetics, art history, psychology and education ( BSc, MA, UBC & UVic) and has worked in cytogenetics (Vancouver General Hospital); in Indigenous mental health (Indian Residential School Survivors Society), Indigenous research (Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research) and education (New Brunswick Community College). Notable achievements include provincial and national response programs for residential school survivors in Canada and Australia, pioneering work for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, knowledge translation programming for non-researchers a national crisis line and a residential school trauma treatment program. Sharon enjoys time with loved ones, swimming, reading, singing and connecting with Creation.

Emily (she/her) is a passionate advocate of engagement, equity and justice. She grew up and currently lives in the unceded territories of the Xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səl̓ilwətaʔɬ Nations. Her past work is rooted in addressing discrimination while building spaces for meaningful connections through learning, unlearning and relearning. She most recently spent her time working at a local neighbourhood house and at a provincial child and youth advocacy organization and volunteering for local organizations that centre youth, art, community, and the environment. She graduated from UBC with an Honours in Sociology, where she wrote her thesis on how the intersection of race and gender affect students’ participation. She’s currently a part-time student in a leadership program at SFU. When not at work, you’ll most often find her out for a run through her community, giving her cats cuddles, or talking passionately about the power of a good spreadsheet.

Hope to see you at the AGM!
