Hello District One!

The Salt Lake City Recorder’s Office is now accepting applications to fill the District One City Council vacancy until Friday, October 29 at noon. As a reminder, applications must be received in person.

The City Recorder runs the application process prior to the Council’s review and interview process. Those interested in applying are encouraged to visit the Recorder’s Office website or call 801-535-7671.

Who can apply?

An applicant:

  • Must be a registered voter.
  • Must reside in District One for 12 consecutive months immediately before the date of the appointment and remain a District resident while in office.
  • Under the Utah Constitution, certain individuals (mentally incompetent, convicted of a felony, convicted of treason, or a crime against the elective franchise) may not hold office until the right to hold elective office is restored under Utah law.
  • May not be employed by Salt Lake City if selected for the vacancy.

Council Process

The vacancy application and selection period will overlap with the District One elections, set for November 2, 2021. In considering applicants, the Council will preserve all options in the process for filling the midterm vacancy.

After the application window closes, the Council will interview applicants as soon after the City elections as possible, and likely on either Thursday, November 4 OR Tuesday, November 9. Please follow the Council's vacancy hub or sign up for vacancy updates to be informed of the interview schedule, meeting dates, and times.

The Council will select, by majority vote, an applicant to fill the District One seat during the meeting. The chosen applicant is then immediately sworn in by the City Recorder.

Please note - District One email newsletters will be temporarily suspended until a new Council representative is selected. Stay up to date on what the Council is doing by signing up to receive meeting agenda and recaps.
