Greetings from Cambodia!

Thanks to your generous support this year, so we have been able to continue our important work during these challenging times. We are so thankful to you for your unconditional commitment to empowering our community members with us.

Let us started by updating you about the COVID-19 situation in Cambodia. This month, the new daily transmission has been reduced significantly. As of 28 October 2021, there are 109 new cases and 8 deaths. Last month, the Siem Reap city, where we are working, were locked down for two weeks and many people who just earned for a day to eat were suffering. However, we are happy to see the positive action of our government to support those vulnerable people with food packages and cash relief.

We are also proud of the wonderful progress of COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Cambodia. At
least 27,243,478 doses of COVID vaccines have been administered so far. Assuming every person needs 2 doses, that's enough to have vaccinated about 82.6% of the country's population.

This vaccination has offered the good protection against severe disease for positive patients and we hope that our country will be able to open the economy and schools again soon.

We are still doing our best to support our students' learning and our community. We hope you enjoy reading our final newsletter of 2021.

We wish you safe and well.

Due to the uncertainties surrounding the start of school, we have considered improving and expanding our activities over the internet in order to assure the quality and variety of our children's learning as we normally do in the classroom before Covid-19.

As a result, three additional activities have been added: a Khmer class, an art class, and a library class. We offer Khmer classes for both beginners and advanced students and teach them following our textbooks. In art class, we show students video lessons before allowing them to try their hand at arts and crafts with the help of teachers. We also read stories to students in library class and help them understand the moral of the stories. Then ask them to choose books to read at home and shoot a video to narrate the stories.

Eight women have successfully completed from sewing program. It is such a great outcome that all of them have improved their confidence and leadership and used their skills to make their lives better. Among eight of them, four have secured employment at an ethical factory and four set up their home businesses.

Through our survey:
  • 100% of them have improved life skills and outlook
  • 92% of them increased confidence and leadership
  • 100% of them have reported a reduction of domestic violence
Another great news - 21 of our graduated students gained employment at an ethical factory and shops in August during this pandemic. This is great because they can still earn income to support their families.

Currently, there are 12 women participating in our sewing program. Even though COVID-19 has affected to their learning, but we have done our best to ensure they keep learning through online learning and getting permission from the chief of commune to run the classes with COVID-19 safe practices.

Our home food garden project has continued to play an important role to support vulnerable women who have lost their jobs and facing food insecure. This project helps people who are willing to help themselves by providing them free basic of home garden training, farming resources, and financial literacy, so they can launch their home gardens in which they can have nutritious vegetables to eat and sell.

For the past four months, we completed our second round with 189 families. As a result, we have achieved the following:
  • 100% of participants are growing vegetables for personal consumption
  • 50% of participants are earning an income through the sale of surplus vegetables
  • 100% of participants report a reduction in financial stress
  • 29% of participants reduced their debt with income earned through the sale of vegetables
  • 80 neighbours were inspired by the success of those gardens and established their own
