Local Government Leading Shift to Renewable Energy

In a giant step towards zero emissions, WA Local Governments have the opportunity to sign up for an Australian first renewable energy agreement. Negotiated by WALGA, the new aggregated agreement has the potential to deliver 100% renewable power to multiple Local Governments, accessing the renewable energy supply from three WA wind farms. This is the first renewables and carbon offset aggregation project, the largest of its kind in Australia.

iDriveWA Towards Zero Emissions Future Transport

WALGA will host a seminar for Local Governments at the Zero Emissions Future Transport Conference and Expo on 4 November at Perth Airport.
 

Proposed Cost Recovery for EPA Assessments

WALGA has prepared a submission on the proposed cost recovery model under Part IV of the EPA, in response to DWER's discussion paper.

Bushfire Mitigation Burning

Local Governments' bushfire mitigation burning activities will be exempt under the Biodiversity Conservation (Exemptions) Amendment Order 2021. WALGA will organise a webinar in the near future with DBCA to provide further information.

State & Federal Updates

Polyphagus Shot-Hole Borer (PSHB) Detected in East Fremantle
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is responding to the confirmed detection of the exotic pest beetle, PSHB, in a residential property in East Fremantle. To stop the spread, a Quarantine Area Notice has been put in place, specifying the boundary area and types of activities prohibited. Local Governments in the area should be aware of this issue to ensure the pest does not spread further.

Central Repository of Curated WA Biodiversity Data Platform (WA-BDR)
The Biodiversity Information Office, hosted by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), has recently developed a whole of state biodiversity data platform, the WA-BDR. This free platform is scheduled to launch mid-2022.

Riverbank Funding for Swan and Canning Rivers and Foreshores
The State Government has announced $1.8 million in new funding for foreshore restoration projects to improve the health of the Swan Canning Riverpark. Funding will primarily go to 15 local foreshore land managers, including 13 Local Governments.

Kalgulup Regional Park Management Plan Announced
The State Government, along with the City of Bunbury and Shires of Capel, Dardanup, and Harvey, officially launched the management plan for the newly established regional park, Kalgulup Regional Park. The park will receive a $10.5 million investment over four years as part of the Plan for Our Parks initiative.

Proposed South Coast Marine Park
DBCA has proposed a south coast marine park, with the study area extending from Bremer Bay to Eucla. A community engagement strategy has been developed, including the establishment of a Community Reference Committee and Sector Advisory Groups, which Local Governments have the potential to become involved with.

Provision of Services for First Disconnected Microgrid
Western Power is seeking registrations of interest from potential suppliers for the first disconnected microgrid pilot in the Mid-West, Wheatbelt, or Great Southern regions. Towns in these Local Government Areas have relatively high power demands.
