Raising Major Gifts of Assets: New strategies for a new world

Presenter: Russell James
Date: Friday, October 22
Time: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
CFRE Credits: 1.5
Location: Zoom
Cost: $10 for members, $20 for nonmembers

Description: Everything is connected! The new world has brought new challenges and new opportunities. There are new laws, new economic circumstances, new attitudes, and new communication concerns. In this presentation, Dr. Russell James reviews the “why” and the “how” of raising major gifts of assets in these times. You will leave with practical examples of new conversation scripts and new planning techniques that work in today’s environment.
Russell has a very exciting presentation prepared for us – one that:
  • Offers highly compelling rationale for nonprofits and fundraising professionals to encourage gifts of assets;
  • Clarifies why and how positive tax consequences influence people’s enthusiasm for making charitable gifts;
  • Briefs participants on giving strategies that are particularly relevant and helpful for donors right now, in view of our 2021 economy, tax laws, and effects of the pandemic.
More About Russell James: Russell James, J.D., Ph.D., CFP, is a chaired professor in the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University where he directs the graduate program in Charitable Financial Planning (planned giving). Prior to his career as an academic researcher, Dr. James worked as the Director of Planned Giving for Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri for 6 years and later served as president of the college for more than 5 years.

Member Spotlight: Naomi Suguitan, The Warrior Connection

Naomi is a new member of AFP, AFP South Sound, and the fundraising and development world. She joined AFP earlier this year in the hopes of gaining knowledge in our field for her new position as Development Coordinator with The Warrior Connection. Like many, she fell into the fundraising world by accident, originally from a psychology and digital marketing background. What surprises her the most about her career is the incredible fundraising community where everyone shares their resources and knowledge. Her long-term professional goal is to grow into a Development Director role with The Warrior Connection.

In her free time, Naomi also volunteers with a small grass-roots non-profit in Augusta, GA-- Jingle Jam 10K. When she's not volunteering or working, she keeps up with her two energetic and rambunctious toddler girls. She also enjoys playing video games and watching Netflix with her husband.
