Mixed Response to Wellness Days

On Sunday (10/10), the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill canceled all classes for a "Wellness Day" Tuesday (10/12) as the school investigated two student suicides that occurred over the weekend.

Following the announcement from UNC Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz, the university shared when and where it would be convening spaces throughout this week for students to be able to meet counseling and mental health experts.

Trends in Conversation Around UNC's Wellness Day:

While conversation around Wellness Days was mostly neutral in online news coverage, reaction from students and faculty were more critical. Reactions to be aware of in preparedness planning:
  • Accusations of posturing, alleging that many classes were already planned to be canceled on that day for "University Day" (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4)
    • One anonymous graduate student noted that some professors took more action than administration by cancelling additional classes.
  • Increased scrutiny around mental health services:
    • Calls for increased funding of Counseling and Psychological Services. (Change.org)
    • Included organization of an impromptu demonstration, which was later postponed.
  • Criticism of insufficient actions taken:
    • One popular post on r/UNC said not enough was done to "recognize lives we lost."
    • Several individuals argued that depression among students should not be normalized.
