Happy Thursday.

We’re almost there — the weekend is so close that we can almost taste it.

And speaking of tasting, today’s newsletter is easy to digest. We may not have the headlines today, but we’ve got a quick overview of Seattle-specific foods and dishes to know. So keep reading!

Seattleisms: The Seattle Dog

If you’ve been reading this newsletter since I took it over more than a year ago, you’ve probably heard me wax poetic about this iconic meal after a night out. Californians have street tacos, New Yorkers have hot dogs, but Seattle has hot dogs with cream cheese in them.

Enjoying a Seattle dog from a street vendor after sweating all night on the dance floor is one of the greatest feelings in the world. The best part is, you don’t even have to have a sip of alcohol to really appreciate this dish (although it does enhance the experience).

What is it? A regular hot dog with cream cheese and grilled onion on it. Usually purchased from a street vendor often spotted outside a nightclub or venue. With that said, the popularity of the Seattle Dog has grown and is often on the menu of any hot dog establishment.

Known for: Being the perfect cheap meal after the shenanigans of a night out. The line for ordering Seattle Dogs is also a great place for camaraderie.

Fun fact: The origin story of the Seattle Dog actually begins with bagels. Hadley Long started a bagel cart that operated late into the night in Pioneer Square and offered an array of vegetarian options. People constantly asked Long if he had a bratwurst or some kind of menu item, and having grown tired of the question, he threw a hot dog in a bialy sort of shaped like a hot dog bun with some cream cheese. You know, because bagels and cream cheese go together. In any case, the end result was a hit. Eventually, grilled onion was added and the Seattle Dog was born.

Usage: “Let’s get Seattle Dogs after the show.”

And as a bonus, since we’re already talking about food, here are some Seattle specific meals/dishes you ought to know about:

Starting with chowder from Ivar's.

  • Chowder — You can get “New England-style” clam chowder here, but it’s going to be slightly different than what you’re used to. Most chowder places source their clams from the East Coast, but put their own PNW spin on the classic. Tourists usually flock to Pike Place Chowder, but I myself am an Ivar’s fan.
  • A Deluxe from Dick’s — Two patties, cheese, lettuce, mayo, and relish. If you grew up here, you don’t need to think twice when it comes to ordering at Dick’s. You know what you like and you know that you will always be able to get it.
  • Salmon spread — It’s just one of those things that you don’t realize is regional until you go elsewhere.  If there’s a potluck, there’s a good chance this will show up at the table. An easy dish to make, it’s just smoked salmon smashed in cream cheese with added herbs. Doesn’t get much better than that.
  • Rainier — It’s pronounced “Ray-NEAR,” and besides being known as the cheap beer that Bella’s dad is seen drinking throughout "Twilight," Rainier is every Seattleite’s go-to for an easy-drinking beer that won’t break the bank.
  • Beecher’s — If you hear someone craving some “Beecher’s,” they’re probably referring to this Seattle institution’s mac ’n cheese. The popular Pike Place Market business is infamous for its chewable dairy products and they’ve got a food menu that puts them to creative, tasty use.
