National Arts & Humanities Month

October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM) and we are loving this opportunity to celebrate the incredible artists and arts institutions across our local community (and throughout our country).

NAHM was launched by
Americans for the Arts more than 30 years ago as "National Arts Week" in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1993, it was reestablished by Americans for the Arts and national arts partners as a month-long celebration, with goals of:

FOCUSING on equitable access to the arts at local, state, and national levels;

ENCOURAGING individuals, organizations, and diverse communities to participate in the arts;

ALLOWING governments and businesses to show their support of the arts; and

RAISING public awareness about the role the arts and humanities play in our communities and lives.

In celebration, Americans for the Arts launched a #ShowYourArt2021 social media challenge. Keep up with us as we participate in this challenge on Facebook and Instagram @fundforthearts

New Murals Celebrate Louisville's Lived and Present History

by Daniel Chioco

While festival events are no longer taking place, the murals themselves are still underway. The theme of the festival is, "We Are the Home of the Greatest," which is focused on celebrating Muhammad Ali's legacy and the legacy of his hometown of Louisville.

One of the murals is being produced by the Creatives of Color Collective, a community of arts organizations created by artists, for artists. Audience Magazine recently sat down with a few members of the collective to hear more about their organization, and what the mural project means to them...

Culinary Arts Grants for Black-Owned Restaurants

Over the last few weeks, the Fund for the Arts team, in partnership with Rabbit Hole Distillery, has had the privilege of presenting funds to 5 local culinary institutions. These restaurants are recipients of the Fund for the Arts' Culinary Arts Grants for Black-Owned Restaurants, a product of our Culinary Initiative Strategic Relief Fund.

On June 14, 2021 Rabbit Hole unveiled its highly-anticipated Single Barrel release and launched its national Single Barrel Program. At a special launch event held that evening at the Rabbit Hole Distillery in NuLu, all proceeds from the sale of the limited edition “Single Barrel” art bottles were donated to support the Fund’s Culinary Arts Grants for Black-Owned Restaurants to aid in recovery from COVID-19 related impact.

Recipients of the Culinary Arts Grants for Black-Owned Restaurants were selected through a nomination process. Community members were invited to nominate local Louisville restaurants that they believed represented the vibrancy of our community’s culinary sector. All grant recipients were chosen from those that were nominated.

Recipients of the Culinary Arts Grants for Black-Owned Restaurants are listed below. Click on the restaurant names to learn more about each of them!

• Ada’s Kitchen
• The Black Italian
• Daddy Rich’s
• Sultra’s Vegan Kitchen (formerly Flora Kitchenette)
