 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
“A school is a building which has four walls and tomorrow inside.”

Greetings Laurel Hall Families,

For my message this week, I am going to send out my report to Church Council for our monthly meeting next Tuesday. After writing it, I realized that it is a good snapshot of some of the (many) positive daily things happening at Laurel Hall:

The wonderful month of October is upon us. Our enrollment is strong. In fact, it looks as though we may have 4 new students joining us next week!

Our sports teams are winning all their games, the cheerleaders are performing wonderfully, the sounds of band rehearsals can be heard each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This can only mean one thing - that Homecoming is just around the corner. The buzz is everywhere, and everyone is chipping in. The PTO, as usual is stepping up in ways that simply go above and beyond. Much of the credit goes to this year’s extremely cohesive PTO Board members Lynn Dee Bollesen (president), Jenna LaFontaine (vice president), Tara Miller (secretary) and Leslie Crosby (treasurer). As for the big event, everyone is invited to any of the following activities - the 1:00 p.m. pep rally, the 3:30 p.m. football game, or the festival in the parking lot beginning at 2:00 p.m. I understand Pastor Jeff will be donning his wetsuit for one of the activities.

As I travel from class to class, I am amazed at the work that is displayed everywhere. The lessons are engaging, students and teachers are in synch. Even the Tuesday and Wednesday COVID testing, (a necessary reality) is not infringing upon learning time in the least. Each testing day we are able to finish an entire grade level before instruction even begins. We complete testing the rest of the grades in under ninety minutes.

The myriad activities signify that this year, we will not succumb to forces beyond our control (as was the case for far too long). Mock Trial and NJHS are rocking. Our new look art department - graphic arts (Tris Caserio) and general art (taught by our latest addition to the LHS family, Patience Lende) - is producing beautiful projects and we look forward to art displays aplenty this year. Our live remote Spanish class, drama, dance, and all other specialty programs are adding such a dynamic vibe to campus. Students and teachers are so appreciative of how far we have progressed.

Soon we will be venturing off to overnight adventures beginning with the 7th grade Catalina Marine Institute trip on Monday, October 25th. This will be followed by Astro Camp this winter for both 5th and 6th grade, and we will put an exclamation point on the school year this spring with our traditional end of year 8th grade East Coast trip.

I can’t tell you how many parents have noticed and commented on what is being described as LHS “stepping up its game”, whether it be in reference to the new look ACE after school program, the upgraded sports program or the aforementioned specialty classes and overall classroom instruction.

The collaboration among teachers is unlike anything I have seen since I arrived in 2017. Friday afternoons are spent in professional development as we meet “whole school”, in grade spans, or in teaching partner teams. Beginning next week, we will be formalizing classroom observations and re-implementing “learning walks” as we formally observe classrooms, then debrief with teachers about what we observed. The focus for these learning walks will be on the California Standards for the Teaching Profession.

There is much to be excited about and much to be proud of this school year.

See you next Friday at Homecoming!

Best,
Jay
