Hi <<First Name>>,
There have been many exciting announcements this past week! I was at in Terrace this past Thursday, celebrating the opening of the renovated library and new student housing building for Coast Mountain College (CMTN)! The building is called the Wii Gyemsiga Siwilaawksat, which translates to “where learners are content or comfortable.” The design of both spaces was inspired by CMTN's First National Council. This new building provides a safe space for 108 students and will help reduce the need for housing in the community. I am so happy to see initiatives that provide both a safe space to learn and an opportunity to increase their intercultural understanding.

Our BC NDP government has also been busy and took many actions this past week. You can read a few of those updates, and other related news, below.

Transforming treatment and recovery care
When we formed the government in 2017, the system of mental health and addiction care in the province was a patchwork of services that did not adequately meet people's needs. It had been neglected for far too long.
For the past four years, not only has our government been busy patching holes to get people the care they need, but we have also been developing a comprehensive plan and making the systemic change required to effectively heal with the drug poisoning crisis and the additional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people's mental health.
This week, we announced an investment of $132 million over the next three years to transform treatment and recovery services for people living with addiction.
This funding will increase services across all regions of the province and across the continuum of care, including withdrawal management, transition and assessment, treatment, and aftercare services. This will include 65 new or enhanced services, more than 130 new staff, and approximately 195 new treatment beds.
In Vancouver Coastal Health, this will include:
- Additional funding for withdrawal beds at Vancouver Detox
- Enhancing substance-use assessment and transition services at Richmond Hospital, Onsite Detox, and at St. Paul's Hospital
- Two new recovery wellness community centres
- A new peer-led, trauma-informed education program
In Fraser Health, this will include:
- New addiction medicine consult team at Burnaby Hospital
- New vocational and occupational therapists to support people in reaching their recovery goals through group and one-on-one employment-focused services
These are just some of the many programs and services that will be rolled out over the next three years. We will be working with health authorities to plan and implement the full suite of services. For more information on this historic investment, visit this page. We are committed to making sure the services people need are there for them, when and where they need them.
