Thank you for doing your bit this half term
Cornwall Council’s Public Health team would like to thank everyone for doing their bit to tackle Covid over the past 18 months.
But as half-term approaches we're asking residents, businesses and visitors alike to stay vigilant and keep up the good work to ensure cases stay as low as possible during the break.
If you have friends and family visiting in the coming weeks, we've got some top tips to help you all have a happy and healthy break:
👏 Hands – wash with water and soap or sanitise regularly
😷 Face - thank you to everyone who is still wearing a face covering
👈👉Space – it's always best to keep your distance from people where possible and avoid crowds
💨Fresh air- being outdoors as much as possible and being in well ventilated areas will help you stay virus free. Why not explore somewhere you’ve not been before in Cornwall? Check out the ‘Discover our towns’ section on the Welcome Back Fund* webpage on our website; and Visit Cornwall some top ideas, too, for outdoor activities. *The Welcome Back Fund is funded by the European Regional Development Fund
🚙 Test - if you're travelling away or visiting Cornwall use Lateral Flow Tests (LFT) regularly in the week before you set off and please don’t travel if you have symptoms or test positive
👉If you feel unwell with classic Covid symptoms, get a PCR test
👉If you feel ill but think you might have another winter illness or aren’t sure if it’s Covid you can now get a PCR test even if you don't have the three main symptoms
👉If you feel unwell please limit your contact with other people and book a PCR test on the GOV.uk website.
🏠🏡 We've launched two new surveys to help us shape the future of housing in Cornwall.
The first survey is about the housing crisis to inform the Housing Crisis Plan, which will aim to tackle the housing pressures here including availability and affordability.
The second survey will help with our review of our 10-year housing strategy.
Cornish children to be given free school meals during half term
Cornwall Council will be providing free school meals over the October half term.
The council will use money from the Household Support Fund to feed over 15,000 young people who are currently accessing the benefit in Cornwall.
Schools will be provided with funding of up to £15 per eligible child to support their local families, and plans are in progress for a scheme at Christmas.
🙋🙋 Giving our young people a chance to have their say.
The Annual Conversation is a opportunity for a conversation between children, young people and council leaders in Cornwall.
In the build up to G7 this June, and throughout the event itself, we heard from lots of children and young people in Cornwall about what matters to them, what they would like to celebrate, what they pledge to do and what they want / need World Leaders to do.
We would now like to invite the young people of Cornwall to work together with us to make sure the conversations we have with Leaders and Decision Makers here in Cornwall, has their voice at the forefront of it.
💉💉💉 This week we hosted a live Q&A session with our three Public Health and NHS experts to answer your questions about Covid-19 booster jabs and vaccines for young people.
If you missed the live event you can catch up again any time you like by following the link 👇
📄 If you haven’t completed the annual household canvass you may receive a visit from a member of staff from the Council in the coming weeks. Anyone visiting your home on behalf of the Council will be able to show you their official ID card.
The annual household canvass ensures that Cornwall Council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered to vote so that they can be encouraged to do so.
If you have questions about the electoral register you can contact your local registration team by calling 0300 123 1115.
The easiest way to register to vote is online via the link below
Get your 'collect code' to pick up your free Covid-19 rapid tests
People with no symptoms of Covid-19 now need a ‘collect code’ to pick up their rapid Lateral Flow Tests (LFTs) from pharmacies – but don’t worry, the process is super simple.
Just get a code online before you head to a pharmacy to pick up your tests.
They will send you your collect code by email or text, because you need to take that code with you to your pharmacy when you go to collect the test packs.
If you are not able to get to a pharmacy, you can order your kits online on the gov.uk website.
If you can't get online, you can call 119 (free from landlines and mobiles), to request a collect code. Lines are open from 7am to 11pm.
♻️ Help us to recycle even more, by sorting your items at home before you get to one of our Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC).
Did you know that, on average, 22% of items disposed of in the general waste container could have been recycled using the fortnightly household recycling service, or placed in more suitable containers at the sites?
Find out more about what items can be recycled in your household collections or at your local HWRC 👇
