EMAlumni Association is looking for a new Secretary-General (see ToR below). Gabriel Alves de Faria, who has been in the post since November 2019, will embark in a new professional adventure, and we are looking for a replacement.

Terms of Reference

The EMAlumni Association represents Europe’s leading body of human rights practitioners, activists, and defenders. The EMAlumni Association gathers the alumni of the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA / GC Europe), based in Venice, Italy and composed of 42 Participating Universities. Job profile

You will develop and implement activity plans and strategies of a strong alumni network, support the work of board members, and continuously liaise with alumni all over the world with the aim to involve them in the network’s projects and initiatives.

Passionate about human rights, network building and teamwork, you understand organisational development and are experienced in management. You will help ensure that the EMAlumni Association is viewed as the leading alumni network

in the field of human rights and democratisation in Europe as you develop effective relationships with key experts, donors, partners and other stakeholders.

This is a part-time opportunity (2 days per week). The position is based in Brussels and it requires one or two travels to Venice per year. The ideal candidate will work as consultant, but a part-time contract could also be envisioned. Remote work from consultants based outside Brussels with some presence there may be a possibility.

Your responsibilities as Secretary-General of the EMAlumni Association:

  • Management of the office, activities, payroll, human resources; 

  • Support the board members to implement different projects, such as Career Day and Webinar Series;

  • Update and edit the website and some social media work;

  • Financial administration and reporting to donors;

  • Organise networking events, conferences and meetings;

  • Organise board meetings in person and online and communicate with the board, members of the EMAlumni Association, volunteers and staff from Global Campus of Human Rights;

  • Represent the organisation at meetings and conferences.

Candidate profile

Essential

• Strong preference for an Alum from the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation, but also open for graduates from other Master’s degree in human rights, international relations or a related field;
• Excellent coordination, planning and organisational skills;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Experience in working with networks and/or membership-based organisations;
• Experience in managing budgets and expenditure incl. some experience in financial reporting;
• Experience working in a human rights /development organisation;
• Ability to work independently and proactively and actively communicate with multiple interlocutors;
• Fluency in English;
•Experience in working with databases and familiarity with website management/development;
• Familiarity with online tools like Google Drive, Mailchimp, SurveyMonkey, etc.;
• Ability to work flexible working hours, including during weekends (occasionally and upon prior notice);
• Work permit or right to work in the EU.

Desirable

• Experience in outreach and social media;
• Experience managing consultants, interns or volunteers;
• Previous work experience in NGO Management or international environment, preferably in the field of human rights;
• Knowledge of other languages (French or Dutch highly desirable).

The selected person is expected to start at some point between November and mid-December, based on the individual situation.

Salary: As a consultant, the monthly fee will be between 1600-1800 euros, depending on experience. For a part-time contract, it should be around 1290 euros brutto, plus benefits (lunch vouchers and transport card).
