Dublin, Ireland Sessions

Cobblestone Pub

by Tony Becker 2016-05-10 updated 2021-10-12

The Cobblestone, described by publican Tom Mulligan as 'a drinking pub with a music problem', is a highly recommended traditional Irish music bar and venue. Literally everyone we asked, "Where is the Craic", from Ray Yeates, the City of Dublin's Arts officer, to our taxi drivers, recommended the Cobblestone.

But the current COVID pandemic is changing all these live music practices world wide, and now there is an attempt to re-develop the property into a hotel, so in mid-October, 2021 I asked Tom for an update:

Lovely to hear from you!
Music is alive and well here in Ireland, but government won’t allow any indoor performance at the moment. Hopefully, this will change as we have been expecting a review of situation since last month, September, 2021.

Live music is allowed, outdoors only at the moment and involves social distancing between performers. Our former smoking area is now the only place for people to play, but we cannot organize the sessions like two years ago. It’s a bit like starting off again, from scratch.

We have had a lot of musicians calling and playing at irregular times, but optimistic that we wager back to former ways, before Christmas.

As many of you have heard, there is a move to redevelop this property as a hotel, which certainly could have an adverse effect on our operation. There is a community based effort to tell the Dublin Planning Commission how important it is to preserve our current community service as a cultureal resourse for Ireland and all it's people. I encourage all our supporters, here and abroad, to sign the online petition. Here's the petition link: https://my.uplift.ie/petitions/save-the-cobblestone.

Thanks very much indeed for your support, past, present and future, and please do keep in touch! — Tom

In 2016, we stopped in late on an April Saturday afternoon, and listened to the last half-hour of the Old-time session as well as the first part of the first Trad Session of the evening. Fiddler Dermy Diamond of Belfast lead both, and the place was absolutely packed, with punters literally shoulder to shoulder. Luckily, Tony was able to secure a couple of pints at the bar, so we were not left high and dry.

Click Here for a video sample of the session!

The Mulligan family have been playing Irish music for five generations, no one can remember back any further. Tom's laid back and friendly pub is built on family tradition as well as respect for the full range of music and culture. Besides the Irish Traditional music and song, The Cobblestone also features Irish Sean-nós singing and dancing, set dancing, céilidh, American Old-time sessions, history talks and more.

The Cobblestone is just fifteen minutes walk from the city center in Smithfield, one of Dublin's oldest neighborhoods, at 77 King St N, Smithfield, Dublin 7, Ireland. Full details on their website http://cobblestonepub.ie

Skip Henderson
Skip Henderson Public Memorial

Thursday, October 21st, 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Public Musical Event – Quinn's Lighthouse, 1951 Embarcadero, Oakland, CA
(Please park in the lighted parking lot across the street, as car break-ins are prolific at Quinn's)

Memorials for Skip Henderson

'Starboard Watch' Band Leader

Bay Area Legend and leader of the band Skip Henderson and the Starboard Watch, Skip Henderson, succumbed to COVID on the morning of Thursday, September 16th at the assisted living home in Eureka where he had lived in for the past few years.

You can post your condolences and check for updates here on the Quinn's & Heinold's Sea Shanty Crew Facebook Group.

Donations
If you would like to contribute to the funeral and memorial services, although certainly not not mandatory, any amount is appreciated at the GoFundMe link, here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/memorial-help-send-off-skip-henderson

Here are a few comments from his many friends.

John Blakemore
During the 1960s, San Francisco's North Beach area was transitioning, and was known as The International Settlement, at Broadway, Columbus and Upper Grant Avenue.

Music thrived in the area. Night clubs like “The Hungry I” flourished and Big Name Folk performers were the norm. There was room for many up and comers too, especially at the Folk Scene on Upper Grant Ave. Lots of small clubs and Coffee Houses took solo acts and small groups.

Skip Henderson was one of the regular performers. Doing this set of clubs, Skip became good friends with Hoyt Axton, recently out of the Navy, also performing in that Scene. They traveled and gigged together a bit before Hoyt headed to LA. and song writing fame.

There are quite a few more stories about the shenanigans of those two…but not now.”

R.I.P. Skip…
Micha Dunston
A Great Lighthouse Has Dimmed: For weeks, Skip Henderson had been coming into my dreams to say goodbye. He left us to sail across the sea, and was undoubtedly met by his dear wife, Patty. A great light has gone out in our community. RIP, dear Shantyman. Please post your thoughts, memories on the Quinn's & Heinold's Sea Shanty Crew Facebook Group. Memorial information is above. We will remember you every time we sing and with every breath in the sails!

Skip is best known for the song he authored Billy Bones and for his music appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean 2, in the bar fight scene, here: Pirates of the Caribbean - Tortuga fight scene 4K video. Skip told me that the Director, Gore Verbinksy, loved the tune and wanted it in the film.

I had the honor of creating several videos of Skip and this one has a REALLY good close up of Skip:
Sea Shanty: A Fine Sea Song by Skip Henderson and the Starboard Watch
This one, with fiddler Brian Theriault at Heinold's, is another GREAT close up of Skip, and shows his passion for the music:
Irish / Scottish fiddle at Heinold's Pub in Oakland
and finally, Skip is real happy in this video of "Plaisir d'Amour" at Heinhold's:
Traditional Accordion and Fiddle: French Waltz "Plaisir d'Amour" at Heinhold's

Fair winds and following seas, Skipper

Online via Zoom from SF Maritime Association

A folk music 'landmark' on the historic ships at Hyde Street Pier, this 39-year San Francisco singing tradition continues in the virtual realm, hosting singers from across the Bay Area – and the country - and now all around planet Earth!

Peter Kasin says,
Ahoy -
Amidst all the chaos going on around us, we still have the monthly virtual chantey sing to help bring joy, calm the nerves, and help us get through these trying times. The next one is on Saturday, October 16th, 11:00 AM to 1:15 PM Pacific time, USA, around 7pm in London and 8pm in Paris

Lead singers will receive a separate link in another email. Since the sings have gone virtual, they have gone international. We have singers from across the country, the UK, and the Czech Republic lined up to lead us in song. All but the lead singer will be muted. Enjoy singing along on the choruses to chanteys from home.
Link for signing up to lead a song: https://maritime.org/sea-chantey-sign-up/ Please use this link ONLY if you are signing up to lead a song. You will be sent a link a few days prior to log on.

Visit https://maritime.org/events-home/chantey-sing for details, including links to a signup sheet, info for lead singers, and some suggested virtual backgrounds. You should have a good internet connection and be ready to have fun!

There will be no chantey sing in November, due to busy Thanksgiving time scheduled, but we we'll have a big virtual chantey sing celebration on the 2nd Saturday of December, since 2021 is the Chantey sing's 40th year!

Fair winds,
- Peter Kasin

The musical partnership between Alasdair Fraser, long regarded as Scotland's premier fiddle ambassador, and the sizzlingly-talented Californian cellist Natalie Haas may not seem an obvious one, but the duo's dazzling teamwork, driving rhythms, and their shared passion for improvising on the melody and the groove of Scottish tunes has helped reconstruct and revive the Scottish tradition of playing dance music on violin and cello.

Over the last 16 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding, and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

Samhain

Hallowe'en: Samhain/Samhuinn/Samhainn

Spiorad na Samhna / Spirit of Samhain film

Samhain Dance
Did you know that the Celts, and in particular the Gaels, created Hallowe'en?

Know historically as Samhain (Irish Gaelic) / Samhuinn/Samhainn (Scottish Gaelic) / Sauin (Manx language), Celts marked the New Year by the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the "darker half" of the year, and occurs halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. According to the Celtic day, the festival is celebrated from sunset on October 31st to sunset on November 1st.

Spiorad na Samhna, (Spirit of Samhain), is a bi-lingual film about the Celtic origins of Halloween that won the Best Short Documentary Award at the 2015 Underground Film Festival in Cork, Ireland. The film traces origins of Halloween itself to the pagan Celtic festival of Samhain. It also traces the origins of Ireland's biggest Halloween Carnival in Derry back to the troubled years of the 1980s.

CLICK HERE to view the film, Spiorad na Samhna.

In modern times, Irish people, Scottish people, Manx people, Celtic neopagans and druids, and Wiccans all celebrate this festival in the traditional way with bonfires, divination, guising/mumming, feasting and other traditional rituals.

In San Francisco, there is a combined event:
Samhaim, the Witches' New Year, is October 31st. PICT will be joining the 42nd Annual Reclaiming Collective Spiral Dance Ritual on Saturday, October 30th, at 1:00 P.M. - 3:30 PM PDT. For the safety of our community and given the increased spread of the Delta strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the Spiral Dance Ritual will again be a virtual event. For more information and to get a ticket to access the ritual, go to the Reclaiming website at reclaimingspiraldance.org.

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

COVID Policy
Vaccination and Masks

Make sure you bring your proof of vaccination when you come to The Plough.
Sean Heaney says:
Music at the Plough is back. We aren hosting an instrumental Irish Traditional session Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM and a song session lead by Christy O'Connell and Vince Keehan on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the COVID pandemic and related public health restrictions put a stop to all that for over a year. The resulting business losses threatened to put The Plough out of business permanently, but a sustained community crowdfunding effort helped keep it going, and now it appears to have emerged intact.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.
