Hello everyone, my name is Emily and I am the new administrative assistant for MiCCA. I will be taking over for Ellie starting this month, who I know gave me a lot to live up to! I look forward to meeting all of you, and learning how to best grow and support MiCCA going forward.

Working for MiCCA is my first big step into the field of human health, with my main goal being to begin earning my Masters of Public Health within the next few years. I recently graduated with my Bachelors of Science from Grand Valley State University in December 2020, where my main interest was using statistics to see how the environment affects human health.

Projects I’ve had the privilege of working with include: Climate Change Education Solutions Network (CCESN), Michigan Resources on Climate and Land Change Education (MiRCLE), and a GVSU research grant where I was able to write about how vector borne disease has been impacted by climate change in South East Asia.

Urgent Action:

Congress is deciding right now what should be included in the climate package during budget reconciliation. We need all the tools in the toolbox, including a price on carbon! A price on carbon is essential to all of the work that we're doing, because if we don't reduce emissions sufficient to get to 1.5 (C) it will be "catastrophic to human health".

Email President Biden Today at: https://citizensclimatelobby.org/white-house/

Please share this and encourage friends, families, and acquaintances to do the same!

Educate

With the much anticipated start of COP26 arriving soon (Oct. 31st-Nov 12th), Healthy Climate is an organization that is strongly advocating for the leaders of every country and their representatives to make human health and equity central to all climate change mitigation and adaptation actions.

Healthy Climate states the importance of COP26 as being one of the most critical moments and opportunities to put the world on a path that protects people from catastrophic climate change.

MiCCA is one of the hundreds of organizations across the world that has chosen to support Healthy Climate’s mission by signing on to their petition. Thousands of individuals have signed this petition as well, with one of the most notable individuals who has signed this petition being Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Empower

As the world prepares to convene at the end of this month for COP26, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed as a climate advocate. For an informative and inspiring break we recommend the article, “Everyone Loves a Success Story: Optimism Inspires Conservation Engagement”.

Engage

CURES Seminar

“An introduction to Environmental Racism in Detroit: Past, Present and Pressing Towards Justice” is an eye opening three part seminar series hosted through Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES) & Integrative Biosciences program. This seminar will be particularly relevant to our network as the recent environmental disasters in Detroit will be at the forefront of discussion.

Click HERE to access a recording of the Oct.7th seminar.

The date of the next CURES seminar is TBD
