Happy Friday readers,

I recently, depending on how generous you are with the term ‘recent’, moved into a new flat. One of the tasks I have been putting off is setting up contents insurance. When I saw the huge Urban Jungle ad campaign on the Tube, I couldn’t help but feel a bit attacked.

I couldn’t put it off any longer, and started looking up “ethical contents insurance”.  The results of my query helped me cross a boring life admin task off my to-do list, and doubled as inspiration for this week’s newsletter. I was introduced to the world of insurtech - the technology behind the creation, distribution and administration of insurance businesses.

The first thing that became immediately apparent was the size of the insurtech market in the UK. In fact, the industry is one of the fastest growing in the fintech space and last year UK insurtech companies received £262M - a rise of 60% from 2019.

In Europe, 2021 has already broken every record for European insurtech and the space has a number of unicorns already.

Today we’re going to be talking about some of the first movers in this space who cross the intersection between tech for good and insurtech. We’ll also look at the industry as a whole, where it’s heading and highlight the black founders who are making waves in an industry where the “gatekeepers are white males”

Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend,

#Insurtech - we got you covered 🥁

👀 The 18 insurtech startups to watch according to top VC.

📈 The insurtech space has rocketed in recent years - this piece makes five predictions for the future.

🍋 The founders of Lemonade say that they wanted to address the asymmetry of power inherent to insurance and claim to be the ‘world’s first open source insurance policy.’ They are also a certified B Corp and a Public Benefit Corporation. Founded in 2015 - they were one of the first movers in this space.

🏡 Habito closed a Series C round at £35M last year. They also claim to be the first-ever B Corp certified mortgage companies. Frequently on ‘scaleups to watch’ lists, this is one to keep an eye on.

🌿 Habito was also a founding member of Tech Zero from Tech Nation - a climate action group for tech companies committed to fighting the climate crisis. You can find out more about the initiative here.

💸 Arma Karma aims to keep policy cost down by letting consumers focus on items they really care about. They also ‘pay-it-forward’ with charitable contributions to four beneficiaries which rotate each quarter.

🦄 Insurtech Marshmallow can boast some pretty impressive stats as the second UK unicorn to be founded by people of Black heritage. As much as we wish this wasn’t news, with the lack of diversity in the VC and startup industries, their growth is especially impressive.

👏 Jihan Abass leads Lami Insurance Technology - an insurtech startup in Nairobi. Here she speaks about why accessibility is the main vision for the company and here she shares more about how their API enables other businesses.

💫 In the UK, only 0.02% of VC funding has gone to Black female founders in a decade. Megan Bingham-Walker, co-founder of Anansi, shares a little bit about the pressures of this here.

🥦 The #TechForFood trend continues to be strong and Atlantic Food Labs is relaunching as FoodLabs, with a dedicated €100 million food tech fund to invest in food, health and sustainability startups.

👁 Google has pulled ‘stalkerware’ ads that violated its policies by promoting apps that encouraged users to spy on their spouses’ phone.

📑 The Pandora Papers are massive - both politically and literally. The leak includes 2.94 terabytes of data. This piece explores exactly how the papers were navigated.

⚡️ Turning to electric vehicles is just one way to slow climate change, but more needs to be done in urban transportation. The New York Times looks into the cities starting to electrify mass transit. Sifted also looks into how startups can reduce pollution in ‘last mile’ deliveries.

🧑‍⚖️ The development and debate of the UK’s Online Safety Bill will be something we pay close attention to. In the Guardian’s tech newsletter, they argue it could set the tone for global social media regulation.
