Virtual Lecture "The Art World of Ukiyo-e" Features Japanese Art

Dr. Julie Nelson Davis, Professor of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania, will present a webinar lecture on Ukiyo-e, the "pictures of the floating world" on October 18 at 5:30 pm (CDT).

These images are regarded today as masterpieces, among the most iconic (and expensive) images in Japanese art. Yet it is often said that ukiyo-e was not appreciated at home in its own time, rather that it was when prints and books arrived in France accidentally—as packing material for ceramics—that they were given due credit. In this talk, Davis debunks that story about ukiyo-e being so little valued, demonstrating that ukiyo-e was thoroughly appreciated as a field of artistic production, worthy of connoisseurship and even of canonization in its own time.

Dr. Davis is the author of Utamaro and the Spectacle of Beauty (2007, second edition 2021), Partners in Print: Artistic Collaboration and the Ukiyo-e Market (2015), and Picturing the Floating World: Ukiyo-e in Context (2021).

This lecture is presented with support from the Japan - US Friendship Commission and the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies. It is co-sponsored by the Department of Art and Art History and the Asian Studies Program.

Spring 2022 Courses Addressing Asia
We have many opportunities to study Asia while at the Capstone, and many Asia courses count towards specific General Education requirements. For Humanities/Fine Arts, you can take The Violent and the Sacred (REL 101), which will highlight Asia, or for the History sequence, you can take Modern Asia Since 1400 (HY 114). Two Asia related courses also satisfy the Writing requirement, Art of Imperial China (ARH 355) and Adv Studies in Comparative Multi-Cultural Lit: Literature of South Asia (EN 411.002). Language courses range from Chinese, Japanese, and Korean to Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Thai, and more. Check out the full list of courses related to Asian Studies while you plan your courses for next semester.

Studying in Asia

Multiple opportunities exist to study in Asia, some of them fully funded. The US State Department's Critical Language Scholarship Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages, many of them related to Asia (Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Turkish, and Urdu). The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

Applications for the program are now open and available on the Critical Language Scholarship application page, and are due by Tuesday, November 16, 2021 by 8:00pm EST. Most languages offered by the CLS Program (9 of 15) do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages. For more information, review the Critical Language Scholarship website or attend a virtual event.
