Message from the Division Director

Dear Colleagues,

We all spend a great deal of time sending and receiving work-related emails, and many of us also have a professional presence on social media such as Twitter and Instagram. These activities, while often useful, can sometimes have negative consequences. I'd like to draw your attention to some recent guidance you may find helpful in this regard. The Journal of Hospital Medicine has published a perspectives paper by Drs. Leora Horwitz and Allan Detsky on the effective use of social media for healthcare professionals, including a practical list of Dos and Don'ts for those who use such platforms. The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine has also developed a best practice guideline on the use of social media, and the Department of Medicine has prepared a statement on the use of work-related text and email communication with the intent of helping faculty members improve work-life balance.

In other news, we should all be proud that University of Toronto faculty have been awarded both the Senior Investigator Award and New Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. Please see below for details on how to attend the virtual lectures later this month.

Finally, for those who are interested in updating their knowledge in perioperative medicine, registration is now open for the Perioperative Care Congress, which includes a debate featuring Drs. Steve Shadowitz and Don Redelmeier. Details below.

Sincerely,
Moira

Dr. Moira Kapral
Director, Division of General Internal Medicine, University of Toronto
