Interested in finance, climate or health reporting? Come along to our upcoming network events!
One of the highlights of the Bureau Local week is our story clinic, which takes place every Friday between 1-2pm on our #newsroom Slack channel. Many of you already join us each week to hear our news, share your ideas and stories, and meet other members of the network. So we're delighted to announce some special guests for upcoming themed story clinics...
- Tomorrow, Friday 8th October, the Bureau's Finance Editor Franz Wild will be joining us to talk all things finance reporting. Drop questions in the Slack channel in advance, or just join us at 1pm for the conversation!
- On Friday 22nd October, we'll be joined by the Bureau's environment team to talk about local climate reporting and accountability in the run-up to COP26.
- Got a topic you want to talk about or a person you want to hear from? Get in touch with us by replying to this email!
As well as our story clinics, network members are also invited to our upcoming Health Inequality Laboratory. This is a space for broad and cross-cutting discussion on health inequality and how it can be scrutinised and reported to drive positive change. The next session will take place at 2pm on Monday 18th October and will focus on the Health and Care Bill, with speakers including Professor Allyson Pollock, clinical professor of public health at Newcastle University and honorary professor at UCL. We hope to see you there!

In case you missed it, last month we celebrated the launch of our new People's Newsroom Initiative, a project to build community power through journalism.
Too many communities in the UK have no source of news that represents them or adequately reflects their experiences. The Bureau Local's Change the Story project and our work on Decolonising News highlighted that, too often, journalism is part of the problem rather than part of the solution.
We realised that if we want a media that belongs to everyone, creating journalism by, with and for our people and communities, we need to build a new, inclusive model that makes journalism accessible to all.
To do this, we’re building a coalition of people and organisations to co-create inclusive and accessible infrastructure for community journalism to start up and thrive. We’ll be exploring a shared infrastructure to support:
- A new, accessible and inclusive pipeline into media ownership, providing business, design and development resources
- Back office support (legal, operational and production) to lower barriers to entry
- Editorial resources to support equitable engaged journalism that serves the public interest

About us
The Bureau Local has been set up by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and is a people-powered network setting the news agenda and sparking change, from the ground up.
We're made up of reporters, data experts, community activists, open data champions and more, who are passionate about local journalism and the role it should play in holding power to account.
This newsletter gets sent out periodically. For day-to-day communication with the network, make sure you are on Slack - our network platform.
