What We're Watching:

Taking Action to Address Sexual Assault on Campus

From online petitions and campaigns to large, in-person protests, backlash against universities’ failure to address sexual assault on college campuses has surged in recent weeks.

According to a new study released by the Association of American Colleges & Universities and American University, 29% of senior administrators surveyed believe that 'sexual harassment or violence' is most likely to trigger an eruption of student protests or activism on campus.

Three Themes We Are Seeing:

  1. Organized Documentation of Complaints
    • Katherine Cho, an assistant professor of student affairs at Miami University (OH) claimed students are using social media to document "their colleges' betrayal of the promises they made to keep students safe...creating a 'digital archive' of unmet demands"
  2. Calls for More Preventative Action
    • The University of Massachusett's student newspaper last week published an article that was critical of the school's statements regarding a recent protest on campus, suggesting that UMass is not doing everything in its power to properly mitigate misconduct.
    • A Tuft's Daily op-ed yesterday called on the university to go beyond "plastering hotlines on a few bathroom doors" and seek actionable ways to address the root of issues.
    • Last week, more than 100 Virginia Tech students showed up at the front steps of campus demanding that the school's administration make "sweeping systemic changes" to more proactively address assault and provide stronger protections for students.
  3. Fraternities Under Increasing Scrutiny
    • Nearly 20 colleges have experienced protests this fall as a direct result of sexual assault allegations at fraternity parties. Growing calls to end Greek life entirely has empowering students to flex their ability to demand what campus social life looks like going forward.
