This Week at SOTH

From Pastor Kristen

The text "We are called to nurture relationships of mutual dependence" is written in a cursive font on a tan background with hand-drawn fall flowers as a border
"Today’s gospel reading is not about who can marry whom or who gets to divorce whom for which reason. These verses proclaim God’s desire, from the beginning of creation, that we be in relationship with God, with creation, and with each other - in mutual dependence and love. That requires vulnerability on our part.

We at Shepherd of the Hills, when we’re at our best, are a community of broken and blessed individuals. Each Sunday, we gather together as people who are hurting and vulnerable, whom God is actively loving and healing. We pray that God will continue to use our hurting, loved, and healing community to nurture relationships of mutual dependence so that God’s reign will be made visible and meaningful to our families, our community, and the world God loves."  (from Sunday's sermon)

Sunday's Gospel reading: Mark 10:2-16

Worship

Image shows a green background with the words See You on Sunday in gray and white type
Join us each Sunday in-person or livestreamed
at 9 a.m. on the Shepherd of the Hills ELCA St Louis YouTube channel.

We continue our mitigation practices of encouraging vaccination, wearing masks, keeping six feet apart, and limiting both time spent singing and length of the worship service. We encourage all those who are not fully vaccinated to continue joining us remotely via YouTube rather than in person. Thank you for your understanding and support of those most vulnerable!

You are encouraged to click the "subscribe" button for our channel in order to get notifications when a livestream begins. Later in the day on Sunday, the video recording will also be linked on our church website and Facebook page.

The text "Stewarding God's Good News" appears in a white circle, with the words Shepherd of the Hills and October 2021 around the edges of the circle. The circle sits on a pale background with leaves that have been painted in watercolors

Stewardship is the careful management of something entrusted to one's care. In the church, stewardship is often linked with money. But when we consider that the church is called to be stewards of the good news of Jesus Christ, we recognize this involves so much more than money. During the month of October, we will pay attention to the following themes of stewardship in our lectionary readings:
Oct. 3 – Stewarding Relationships
Oct. 10 – Stewarding Wealth
Oct. 17 – Stewarding Power
Oct. 23 – Stewarding Courage

2022 Estimate of Giving Cards

From our Estimate of Giving letter: "We have a lot to look forward to in 2022, and we hope that you will be able to support that ministry in some way.  Please complete this Estimate of Giving card and return it through the mail or at sothstl.org/pledge as soon as you are able (preferably by October 17) so that we can make preparations to faithfully steward the finances of the congregation for the coming year."

New Flooring

The council has signed the contract with Floor Coverings International for new flooring. This includes carpet squares in the hallway and sanctuary as well as vinyl flooring in the fellowship area. All offices and classrooms will keep the current carpeting. Fortunately, the total cost for the flooring and installation will be covered by an anonymous donation and the support of the Men’s Club. The timing for installation is still to be determined based on when the supplies are delivered. More updates will come as we have more information.
