Community Curbside Giveaway Day
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - Back by popular demand, the Fall 2021 Community Curbside Giveaway Day will be held in Niagara Falls on Saturday, Oct 23 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.
"We want to offer our residents an accessible, environmentally conscientious way to dispose of their unwanted items and encourage them to choose second-hand instead of new, where possible," said Jeff Guarasci, Community Development Coordinator and staff liaison for the Park in the City Committee. "The Curbside Giveaway Day makes donating convenient for many residents, is a fun way to spend a Saturday, and raises awareness about the need for landfill diversion in our community."
Last October, the Park in the City Committee introduced the landfill diversion initiative under their mandate to encourage environmental responsibility through community action. The public response was overwhelmingly positive with hundreds of residents participating in the event's online message board and sharing photos and updates on what was available and where.
The popularity came as no surprise to the Committee. Between pandemic restrictions and news of the global renovation and re-organization boom, committee members saw an opportunity to help reduce waste and keep good items out of the local landfill while donation centres were closed. The initiative promotes many tenets of a circular economy: reduce, reuse, repair and repurpose things instead of simply discarding them.
The Community Curbside Giveaway Day is free and open to all residents of Niagara Falls. Lists of acceptable and unacceptable items, along with event rules are posted at niagarafalls.ca/curbside.
