Grandmother's Garden Patchwork & Quilting

7th October, 2021

Dear <<First Name>>,

After mentioning the reluctance and the rudeness of some “nice” mature quilters to comply with the law of mask-wearing and signing in, I have heard many other stories including one about a small craft/embroidery store in Wellington closing because of customer abuse to the extent of customers throwing items at staff.

If you are familiar with Lord of The Flies, and most schools have studied this book, William Golding conveys this message...
“Human beings must have rules, authority and government in order to maintain a safe environment. Left to their own, with freedom from discipline, rules, and governmental regulations, Jack and his tribal warriors return to animal instincts.”

We know there is much anger and frustration out there but I don’t think there's any reason for the abuse that is appearing in social media, abuse to talkback hosts and even I have had some nasty emails which I have not discussed with you as I would not give them air time.

Off my soapbox now!

New Fabric!

A very large shipment arrived last Friday from America.

Grunge

A very big shipment of this range has arrived. The shelves are again full! This is a really useful fabric, so time and time again we turn to it. It’s as though someone has brushed on the colour with a large paintbrush. Some colours have hints of other colours left in the paintbrush. We now have a very large collection, although a lot of what we received is already ordered from as far back as January!

Peacock Walk from RJR

These are digitally printed and are to die for. So soft and summery. We have three bolts of fabric but we also have 5” squares and 10” Layer Cakes but one of those is mine!

Here is a quick video on Facebook with no sound from RJR showcasing these beautiful fabrics.  Click here to view.

I cannot find a quilt using this beautiful fabric so it might be too soon. No doubt they will begin to appear in the new year. Meantime I am sure you have some great ideas!

Flower Shop by Clothworks

Here is another collection with Layer Cakes and 5” squares.

These are not free patterns but they will give you an idea of what this fabric looks like made into a quilt. It just says “Summer!”

We have the nice small panels of flowers and two others for borders but the precuts will give you the whole collection.

Panels

The first one is a wild card but I would imagine it will go quite quickly. I am even thinking my 12-year-old grandson might need one! It’s ugly and horrid enough to appeal to a teenage boy! The rats are disgusting!

Beautiful Christmas Poinsettia Panel

We have had a poinsettia panel from Hoffman before and this time the one that arrived last week is a little smaller and it also comes in white.

Magnificent Animals from P&B Textiles

We have a very large panel with animals 1.3m x 1.15m plus a co-ordinate and probably the best way to show you this is by taking you to a free quilt pattern.

The colours are incredible.

We received a shipment just last night and we will see how these go in a traditional Quilt Shop before committing to larger quantities and other collections like Tula Pink.

Book

A year ago this book arrived and a staff member hid it because she did not like it. We found it the other day and here it is! It is a pictorial book with hundreds of photographs dating from 1855-1955. There are stories of life in the USA in those hard pioneering days and the reason the staff member did not like the book is that there are several photographs of dead babies - beautifully dressed and in nice picture frames - but that is what they did then! This is just an amazing collection of original photos - many quilting bees. The book is hard covered and the pages have thicker glossy paper. One book only! $61.50.

Mask Stuff

Although we ordered lots more mask templates than we had orders for, I’m afraid those extras have now all gone, but we ship once a month.

Reflections

This is a most beautiful Block of The Month and a large queen/king (88" x 88"). We are going to do it over four months to cut back on the cost for you. All the fabric has arrived in the last shipment from America BUT only enough for ten participants. We really want to send this out by the end of October for you to get going on it.

Month 1: You will receive most of the fabric except for the final border and you will receive three months worth of patterns.

Month 2: You will receive the rest of the fabric for the blocks plus three more patterns.

Month 3: You will receive patterns only.

Month 4: You will receive the remainder of your fabric plus the last two patterns.

The total cost of the quilt is $520 so each of the four months you pay $130.00 plus postage. If you wish to receive everything at once the cost will be $520 saving you the price of four lots of postage and then you can go at your own speed.

Finally
Some of the fabrics from last week disappeared overnight - especially the Kiwiana - which will be available again in March so don’t panic. It’s often difficult to know how much of anything to order, and obviously this time we didn’t buy enough. With the Kiwiana, we can usually order more, but not this time.

Armchair Travel

Come with me to Scotland (Scatland), to the Highlands. Apologies for the American Tour Guide. I wonder if he can say Loch or does he say Lock!! It’s more of a documentary but there is some wonderful scenery.

Click here to be taken to the YouTube link.

That’s all I have time for this week but there is much more to tell you about!
Until next week, stay safe and let’s hope we don’t stay locked down for too long in the Waikato. We are extremely busy with mail order, its taking most of a day for two of us to fill orders but we will get there!

Hazel

P.S

I made these lemon cookies which were yummy! The gal who posted the recipe said to not over cook them but I found them too soft so I returned them to the oven, turned the oven off and left them overnight. They have ended up crunchy and I will make them again. You decide whether or not you want soft or crunchy

Lemon Crinkle Cookies

2 teaspoons Lemon Zest, 1 lemon
        1 cup Granulated Sugar
        1/2 cup butter, softened
        1/2 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
        1 large Egg
        1/4 cup Lemon Juice
        1/4 teaspoon Salt
        1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
        1/8 teaspoon Baking Soda
        1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
        1/2 cup icing Sugar

In a food processor or the bowl of a stand mixer, mix together the sugar and lemon zest until well combined and the sugar is lightly yellow and fragrant.
Add the softened butter to the sugar and mix until light and fluffy.
Add the vanilla, egg, and lemon juice and mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Add the salt, baking powder, baking soda and flour and mix until combined.
Chill the dough for one hour.
Preheat the oven to 350°F/180 degrees celsius.
Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
Roll the cookie dough into tablespoon-sized balls, roll them in icing sugar and place them 2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
Bake for 10-11 minutes or until they are just starting to brown on the edges and are no longer shiny.

P.P.S

Now for a different sort of News

With the prospect of me retiring in the near future, staff at Grandmothers Garden are looking around for alternative ways of making a living! I will certainly do everything I can to support them. Here is Jessie’s story.

Jessie is based in Morrinsville and runs a small business venture called Balsamic Moon.  She makes self-care products for the body and home using natural-based ingredients, free from synthetic chemicals and preservatives.  She makes Beeswax Wraps and her self-care range aims to help people with treating minor ailments and taking preventative measures by utilising the botanical influences of plants through essential oils. For example, she makes an Anti-Inflammatory Salve made from a selection of anti-inflammatory plants in a beeswax & oil salve to help calm aches and pains. Balsamic Moon’s packaging resonates with reusing and recycling, meaning some of her product packaging is made from upcycled materials,  her bags are made from bedsheets from the secondhand store.

Jessie has recently launched her own website.

Click here to be taken to www.balsamicmoon.org

For the duration of this week, when you make an order with Grandmother’s Garden you can request a free sample of one of her products.

You can choose from the following:

Shaving Butter
Foot Salve
Anti-Inflammatory Salve
Itchy Scalp Shampoo Bar
Stink Foot

(Click on each product to be shown the description on her website)

Please indicate your choice at the end of the web order in the special delivery notes, or when you contact us via phone or email when making your order.

We are hoping to help Jessie build a customer base she can market to in the future.
