Aloha,

National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day was created by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Association to help raise awareness of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies as well as highlight the vast potential the technologies have today and in the future. The date, October 8 (10.08) was chosen in reference to the atomic weight of hydrogen (1.008).

At Hawaiʻi Gas, part of our commitment to help the state reach its carbon-neutral goals by 2045 is the decarbonization of our fuel sources and that includes the continued use and development of hydrogen in our fuel mix. Our vision is to be an industry leader in transitioning to zero-emissions fuel sources—like hydrogen—safely, affordably and reliably.

Currently, we have up to 15 percent hydrogen in our synthetic natural gas supply that provides energy to most of our residential and commercial customers on the island of Oʻahu. 15 percent use of hydrogen in a supply mix is the most of any utility in the nation!

Looking ahead, Hawaiʻi Gas is exploring several hydrogen research and development projects to try and overcome the technological challenges that stand in the way of increasing renewable natural gas and hydrogen in our supply mix. To date, we have made available over $1 million for information and materials to support hydrogen research and find ways to increase production in a safe and affordable way. We have also partnered with industry leaders across the world to collaborate with and share information to further the development of hydrogen technologies and prove that hydrogen can a viable source of clean, affordable and reliable energy.

Developing hydrogen-based fuel in Hawaii is one of our priorities in helping the state reach its carbon-neutrality goals.
