Brave Noise.

In last month's e-newsletter, I mentioned Brave Noise Beer—a new collaboration designed to advocate for safe spaces and inclusive environments.

Tim Haran | Utah Beer NewsBreweries are banding together to brew a pale ale—and at the same time make their code of conduct policies easily accessible to the public.

Brave Noise is a collaborative effort to provide inclusive and safe environments for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ throughout the beer industry, according to BraveNoiseBeer.com. It’s a "collaboration with a big goal. A safe and discrimination-free beer industry."

Brave Noise Beer Brewing TeamWasatch Brewery, which celebrates its 35th anniversary later this month, is one of 115+ craft breweries participating in the effort.

It brewed the beer in September, with a release date planned for early October (Wasatch is now targeting late October. As part of the initiative, breweries agree to submit a code of conduct, and Wasatch says it's waiting for that piece to be finalized with the committee.)

For some background on how Brave Noise became a movement, a story from Brewbound chronicles a "tidal wave of sexual harassment allegations and toxicity in craft beer." Brienne Allan, at the time a production manager for Notch Brewing in Massachusetts, shared in her Instagram Stories hundreds of experiences from industry employees of "workplace discrimination and allegations of sexual harassment and assault" at craft breweries.

"The Brave Noise collaboration is meant to provide awareness and create action for safe and inclusive environments in the beer industry," says Allan, in a news release. "I hope breweries join us in advocating for change and develop resources to best support industry professionals and customers for a better (beer) world."

Additionally, since I first wrote about Brave Noise Beer, it appears that two other Utah breweries—Salt Flats and Uinta—have joined the effort, according to BraveNoiseBeer.com.

Related, in September the Brewers Association formed the Brewing Respect and Unity (BRU) Coalition "to combat sexual harassment and discrimination in the beer industry," according to a Sept. 10 Brewbound article.

The article quoted Brewers Association President and CEO Bob Pease as saying the "coalition is a long-term commitment to provide industry-wide best practices to build an equitable, safe and inclusive growing community."

Cheers,
Tim

Offset Bier Co.: New Brewery in Park City

I visited Utah's newest brewery late last month and enjoyed a few 0.2l pours (about seven ounces and a brilliant size for trying out new beers).

📸 Here's a larger image of the tap list from the day I visited.

Offset Bier Co., which opened on Sept. 10 and is located at 1755 Bonanza Dr., Unit C in Park City, specializes in "modern hop-forward ales and lagers," according to co-owner Patrick Bourque, "and a handful of traditional styles we personally love."

The unfiltered Kölsch-style ale proved to be a personal favorite, but don't sleep on the new-world hoppy "Lie" PAs (hoppy beers "designed to carry a much higher hopping load than their ABV would indicate.")

Welcome to town, Offset.

🍺 Notable: 2 Utah Beers to Try

Beer Name/Style: Broadway Hop (147 West Series), IPA
Brewery: Squatters Craft Beers
ABV: 5%
Notes: Squatters kicked off its new 147 West Series by brewing a delightful West Coast-style IPA. Broadway Hop is its inaugural brew in the rotating series (the original Squatters pub is located at 147 West Broadway in downtown Salt Lake City). I picked up bushels of big citrus all the way around in this one. A decent hop bitterness is balanced by a dose of ever-so-slightly chewy malt.
Beer Name/Style: Bumpy Pucker, Raspberry Sour
Brewery: RoHa Brewing Project
ABV: 5%
Notes: The next offering in RoHa's "pucker" kettle-soured series starts and finishes with a heaping helping of tart raspberry. The beer pours a light to medium pink/red with a hefty cap of white foam. Aromas of raspberries dominate (makes sense) and tartness punches you right in the ol' tastebuds. Maybe I'm a softy, but if you like sour sours, I have a feeling you and Bumpy Pucker will become fast friends.
About Notable Beers: From time to time I'll use the above space to share two beers that I believe are worth seeking out. If you're a brewer or craft beer enthusiast who would like a specific beer to be considered, please send me an email by Oct. 25 with details about the beer.
EVEN MORE BEERS: By the way, here are a few new beers—or returning seasonals—that have been brought to my attention since the last dispatch. Check out the individual social posts for details.

🤔 A Chance to Win: Where Am I?

EXCITING NEWS! The new feature I started over here at Utah Beer News—exclusively for e-newsletter subscribers (like you!)—is really taking the craft beer world by storm. Here's the deal:
  1. Email me with your best guess as to where the above photos were taken (i.e. in this instance, the name of the brewery. Both photos, believe it or not, were taken at the same location). One guess per email address each month, please.
  2. I'll select two names from correct, eligible entries to each win a $25 gift card
That's it! The deadline to enter is Oct. 15, 2021. I'll announce the winners here next month. Good luck!

🏆 September's Winners: Congrats!

Congratulations to Thomas W. and Craig B., who correctly identified that the photos below 👇 👇 👇 were taken at none other than Salt Flats Brewing in Salt Lake. Each will receive a $25 gift card to the Garage Grill, compliments of Salt Flats Brewing.

Thanks to everyone who submitted a guess in September (there were quite a few correct answers). Be sure to try again this month.
