Kintsugi Workshop- 21 October

Presenting an established and popular part of our workshop program: an age old way to minimise waste to landfill.

Kinds is the Japanese art of putting broken ceramics back together with gold — built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art.  Every break is unique and instead of repairing an item like new, the 400-year-old technique actually highlights the "scars" as a part of the design.
This workshop includes a gold repair kit with all necessary equipment and artist tuition.

When: Thursday 21 October | 6:30 – 8:30pm
Where: Town of Cambridge Administration Building, 1 Bold Park Drive Floreat
Cost: $75 payable prior to workshop commencement

Recycle Right : New App Available

Recycle Right... encouraging and assisting residents and businesses in Western Australia to recycle, reduce their waste and live more sustainably

A new app and website has been launched to help the residents of the Town to Recycle Right.
The new resource (recycleright.wa.gov.au) encourages and assists residents and businesses in Western Australia to recycle, reduce their rubbish and buy more recycled products. Developed by the ‘Recycle Right’ education program, the much-anticipated update of the Recycle Right app features:
  • Which Bin – find out at a glance, what goes in which bin along with what doesn’t belong there and the correct methods of disposal.
  • Bin Day Reminders – set an alert to reminder you of which bin goes out on what day for your area.
  • An ever-growing A–Z list of specific items and what to do with them.
  • Find My Nearest – an extensive database of drop-off locations or recycling facilities in Perth for items such as batteries, car parts, building/demolition waste, hazardous household waste and more.
The website also provides a Resources Hub of worksheets, how-to guides, fact sheets and templates.
Information on both the app and website is tailored to the full assortment of bin systems found in our council: 3-bin GO (Garden Organics) system.

Domestic Waste and Recycling Dashboard

Interested how the Town stacks up in terms of domestic waste and recycling?

This dashboard allows you to view information about the tonnes of waste collected and recovered by local governments in 2019–20 alongside trends in domestic waste collection and service provision since 2014–15.

The material recovery data is predominantly obtained from annual returns lodged by liable persons to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation under regulation 18C of the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Regulations 2008.

The data can be filtered by local government, regions and waste service type.

Cambridge Gown Revival

Do you have a ball or event coming up?
Another first for any council – this is a joint initiative between Waste and the Library to slow down expensive fast fashion usually bought for one event and rarely worn again. Cambridge Library now offers the wonderful new resource of being able to borrow a ball gown or cocktail dress for that upcoming special occasion.

The Frock-Up Cambridge Gown Revival is not only a cost effective way to source that great gown, but also is a step towards limiting the resources used in fast fashion where items are only ever worn once and then kept in wardrobes forever more…. Or even worse - discarded. The only cost to the borrower is to have the dress dry-cleaned after use by the Floreat Forum dry cleaner.

For more details contact Cambridge Library on 9383 8999 or library@cambridge.wa.gov.au

Mattress/Ensemble Base Collection

All residents have access to free pre-booked mattress collection.

This includes mattresses and mattress ensembles bases only. No headboards, bed frames etc are collected in this program.

The average mattress consumes 0.75m³ of space in landfill and contains approximately 12.5kg of steel, 2kg of wood and 1.5 kg of foam. Collected mattresses and bases are delivered to Soft Landing in Wangara, where they are deconstructed. Up to 75% of the mattress components are able to be recycled.

Steel springs are recycled into products such as roof sheeting; foam into carpet underlay; husk into weed matting and mulch; timber into kindling, mulch and animal bedding; and fabric into end use products such as acoustic panelling.

For bookings go to our recycling Programs page on our website: https://www.cambridge.wa.gov.au/Resident/Waste-Recycling/Recycling-programs

Green Waste Bags

75L green waste bags are now available for purchase – these are perfect to put out items for green waste Verge Valet bookings (they will be left by the team after emptying). They are $10 for 2 and available from the Admin Centre.
