THINGS TO DO THANKSGIVING WEEKEND

3rd ANNUAL THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
Sunday October the 10th from 11AM to 1PM
Sturgeon Point Union Church

As you clean out your cupboards for the winter, bring non-perishable food (pasta, sauce, beans, crackers, cereal…) and toiletries to the church.  Larry Thomas will be there to collect food and financial donations (cash or cheque) for the Salvation Army’s Food Bank.

If you miss the designated time, you can drop food and donations off to Larry at 28 Irene Ave.

COLLECT YOUR STURGEON POINT COMMUNITY MAP
Sunday October the 10th from 11AM to 1PM
Sturgeon Point Union Church

Isabella Aspinwall will have a table at the Church during the food drive, so paid SPA members can collect their community map.  If you aren't able to get your map during that time, please email spa@sturgeonpoint.com to make other arrangements.

PICK UP YOUR COPY OF STURGEON POINT HISTORY
Sunday October the 10th from 11AM to 1PM
Sturgeon Point Union Church

If you already ordered a book from Patricia Aspinwall, you can pick your copy up at the Church during the food drive.  Books are $10 and can be paid by cash or e-transfer only.

If you'd like to order a book, please contact Patricia Aspinwall directly or through SPA.  I don't know how many copies she'll have at the Church, but I know she has more being printed.

ANNUAL RIGADOON FOOTBALL GAME

Sunday October the 10th from 1PM to game over
“Rigadoon” – 33 Henry Street (Wisener cottage)

Tim Wisener is once again hosting the Thanksgiving Football Game at Rigadoon.  Come one, come all.  Bring a chair and a beverage and a fun, yet slightly competitive, attitude.

Come to play or come to watch.  Just come.

A celebratory drink is, obviously, in order!

When I was a kid, growing up in in Southern California in the '70s, my community was 10 people - my immediate family of 5 and our best friends, another family of 5.  This family of 10 did everything together:  celebrated holidays, went to church and spent summer vacations at the beach with the sun making our hair golden and our skin pink and the cold Pacific Ocean making our lips blue, until we were forced out of the water by an exasperated mother.  Every Friday night, our parents got together to play cards and drink cocktails.  The six kids, three boys and three girls, spent the evenings annoying each other, sometimes to tears.  Invariably, there'd be cries of "Mooooom, he's looking at me!  Stop looking at me!" and someone always claimed "It wasn't me!".  It's this early familial community that instilled a love of community in me and what draws me to the rich history and community of Sturgeon Point.

In honour of the '70s, and the cooling weather that Fall brings, I'd like to introduce you all to The Godfather.  The Godfather is reported (but not confirmed) to be the favourite drink of Marlon Brando, who is the only Godfather any of us can name (except perhaps my Italian family in Montreal, or so the rumours go).

The recipe is simple:

2oz Scotch (preferable a smokey scotch)
1oz Disoronno Amaretto

Pour over ice in an old fashioned glass and stir.  Simple dimple.  Best enjoyed while lounging in a hottub listening to the Bee Gees or ABBA.

Cheers to the new SPA Board and cheers to the Sturgeon Point community that SPA serves.
The 2021 SPA Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The AGM was held on Sunday, September 5th.  You can read the  Minutes of that meeting, and any past meeting, on the SPA Archives page.

Thank you to all that attended.  Despite COVID, we had a great turn out with everyone respecting the rules around masks and physical distancing.

In a nutshell, the Board gave updates on our financials, Trustee lands beautification, Roads & Maintenance and more. There was a call for nominations to the Board and Directors were elected.  Councilor Doug Elmslie was our guest speaker and he answered questions and heard comments from the community about... mostly roads.

Roads are a hot topic and have been discussed at nearly every AGM I've attended.  It became clear at the AGM that the more vocal we are the more likely someone will listen and take action.  The best way to be heard is for everyone to visit the CoKL Report and Issue or Concern page to lodge a complaint about the state of the road and snow plowing in the Point.  The Board is encouraging everyone to do so.

Please contact us at spa@sturgeonpoint.com if you'd like to get involved with our Board or if you have any questions or comments for the Board.  Your email will be redirected to the appropriate person to respond.

Halloween 2021 is on!

We'll send out a separate email with the Trick or Treating Survey, the details of the activities in the Park and the Treat Map.
News from the Union Church

BATHROOM BUILD
The Sturgeon Point Union Church will soon have a bit of company on its lot. We are constructing, this fall and spring, a fully accessible washroom facility on the land to the west. Because the church is a heritage property, neither the committee nor the Ontario Heritage Trust wished to disturb the octagonal design, so a decision was made to construct a free standing building, housing two fully accessible bathroom stalls. It is our hope that having a place to "go" will add value to the building, opening up further possibilities for the church's usefulness to the community, beyond Sunday services.

We hope construction will be finished by next spring. Fingers crossed.
