 RE:writes

Hi! Welcome to re:books.

Wedding season is coming to an end, which means we don't have to listen to any more long-ass cookie-cutter speeches thanking every Tom, Dick, and Harry the couple has ever known. (We know, you couldn't have done it without them.🙄)

Something my editing brain can't help but do at every. single. wedding is edit those long-winded, unoriginal spiels. Read about all the ways I improve alter wedding speeches in my head in real-time. (It's a talent, but not sure if it's a blessing or a curse?)

And yes, while I'd say I have a knack for this sort of thing, I'm no expert. But award-winning journalist Wendy Dennis is! Check out her top three tips to writing a memorable wedding speech here.

Speaking of advice, I need yours. Scroll down to give me feedback on something very important...

Until next time, flip your hair and flip the page!

xoxo,

P.S. I have a book lover's dream tRE:at from us at re:books. Check it out below! 💳

 What I'm RE:ading

A balancing act with fiction and non-fiction.
“Times have changed”. We hear this a lot — and for the most part it's true, but what if you lived the exact same storyline in different lifetimes? How much would really change? Time Squared (ECW Press) has a clever and original answer. A love story that stays the same over different eras, this book by Lesley Krueger is a unique concept that ties in historical events, world wars, and women's roles in society...leading to a surprising ending.
On Opium: Pain, Pleasure, and Other Matters of Substance (Goose Lane Editions) hit me hard. Until I saw a friend lose the love of her life due to an overdose, I did not comprehend the severity of the opioid crisis in North America. Like many, I read the news and heard the stories but had no clue about the reality of the addiction, torment, and misinformation. Until I picked up this book. This is an eye-opening narrative on the opioid and drug pandemic that is swallowing our youth, from an author who’s lived it, experienced it, and out to educate the world so that together, we can overcome it.

 RE:caRE:s

Spotlight on Jewish authors and characters.

Set in 1958 in Atlanta, GA, In the Neighbourhood of True (Algonquin Books) is a story of a teen girl from New York City who is forced to choose between what she wants — to fit in with the popular crowd — and who she is. Born into a devout Jewish family, Ruth successfully conceals her religion from her new friends and charming Christian crush, until a hate crime forces her to face the reality of what it's like to live in a prejudiced community, and what it takes to rise above and fight for the right to be yourself.

“I hope their stories will inspire readers to join in the global fight for equality.”

Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and founder of Pivotal Ventures, about her new nonfiction imprint with Flatiron Books, a division of Macmillan. The imprint, called Moment of Lift Books, will release three books about women and girls beginning in 2023. A little sneak peek of a chapter a week. (Coming soon!)
I'm letting you in on a little secRE:t. I've already started working on my next book! 🎉 It's tentatively titled My Uneven Eyebrows and Other Modern Midlife Issues No One Warned Me About (catchy, right?).

The best part? Starting next week, I'll be re:leasing a short chapter each week, and YOU will be the first to read them.

But before you can find out what's inside, we need to lock down the cover. You be the judge: Which one of these covers do you like best?
