An Honors College at Perimeter Update

Welcome to The Honors College at Perimeter Update!
In this email, you will find information about:

A Note from the Associate Dean

I am very excited to share several international opportunities that are on the horizon for honors students!

Did you know that participation in study abroad will earn you credit towards the Honors Scholar recognition and transition to the Honors College in Atlanta? It’s true! Just participating earns you 3 credits towards the 12 hours you’re aiming to earn in Honors.

This coming summer, June 19-July 8, we will be embarking on our first ever Honors Abroad trip. We will be traveling to the Netherlands (The Hague and Amsterdam) and Belgium (Brussels) and will be offering two courses – Honors ENGL 1102 and Honors POLS 2401 – for a very intimate group of 10-12 honors students.

I just returned from a site visit to Northern and Central Italy where I began planning for our 2023 Honors Abroad trip! On that trip, we will visit Rome, Tuscany, Venice, and Milan with two courses (Honors ENGL 1102 and an Honors Art History class).

Both of these programs will be exclusively honors students, so participation will earn students up to 9 hours towards the 12-hour requirement for the Honors Scholar recognition and also transition.

We will also be offering honors seats on our study abroad trip to Greece in May 2022. That program will be led by our Dunwoody honors coordinator, Professor Neeley Gossett.

International Education Week (November 8-12) will be a great opportunity to be introduced to the Netherlands, as the Honors College is hosting a panel of Dutch and US students to discuss life and culture in their “home” countries. This is in partnership with students from The Hague University, whom we will be meeting on our Honors Abroad trip this coming summer.

Part of honors education is learning to be a global citizen, and there are a great number of ways to make that happen. There is more information in this newsletter about the various study abroad opportunities and how to apply. I hope you will consider participating in some or all of these opportunities!

Honors Book Club: Klara and the Sun

The Honors College at Perimeter's book club selection this year is Nobel Prize in Literature (2017) laureate Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun. This is a fascinating novel that is rich for discussion, and we encourage all honors students to participate.

Below, you'll find a flyer with information about joining the book club and attending our initial event Friday, November 5th on WebEx. If you can, try to have read some of the novel by then, but come to the book club event regardless.

For the event on November 5th, Dr. Sergey Pils of the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS) will offer introductory remarks on machine learning and current debates on ethics in computing.

There are a limited number of books provided free of charge for students interested in participating. Students are also encouraged to check out a copy of the book from their local library or the GSU library or to purchase a copy of their own.

While this will be the only event for the book club this fall, we will continue to cover Klara and the Sun in the spring, including an online discussion of the book and an in-person discussion at Phillips State Prison with our incarcerated students.

Most book club events will be virtual, so this event is open to everyone, including online students, students at the five physical locations, and dual enrollment students.

Interested students should fill out this form. Email perimeterhonors@gsu.edu with any questions.

Research Opportunities

Looking for a research opportunity to fulfill the requirement of the Honors Research Scholar?

Learn more about the Georgia State Undergraduate Research Conference (GSURC) and how to become a presenter: https://gsurc.honors.gsu.edu/

Here are the requirements for submitting a manuscript to Discovery Journalhttps://scholarworks.gsu.edu/discovery/about.html

Watch upcoming newsletters for information on the GA Collegiate Honors Council (GCHC) conference and how you can get involved as a presenter spring 2021!

Other options: Talk with faculty and department chairs in your major discipline about opportunities to present at a professional or student-oriented research conference. There are many, many opportunities, and costs for students to participate can be very low -- and perhaps the departments even have funding for student participation. For this academic year, we will count virtual presentations at official academic conferences toward this recognition.
