In three weeks, Boris Johnson will host world leaders in Glasgow at the UN climate summit (COP26).

It’s crucial there’s progress, but many leaders from lower income countries are saying they can’t possibly respond to the climate emergency with huge debts hanging over them.

Lower income countries are least responsible for emissions, and worst affected. They need funds to cope with the costs of the crisis – without going into more debt.

It’s the richer polluting countries that should pay for the damage caused and to support the transition, something they have partly acknowledged but have so far failed to do.

The UN estimates that climate-extreme events are happening at a rate of one per week, with the impacts of the climate crisis set to cost vulnerable countries up to $300 billion per year. And yet, in 2020 alone, lower income countries spent $372 billion on servicing debt.

This November at the COP26 summit in Glasgow we have the chance to make sure world leaders get the message that without dealing with the debt, there’s no way out of the climate crisis.
