Simple Gifts: Prayer and Presence

When members join the United Methodist Church, they do so with a vow. “As a member of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service and your witness?”  An affirmative answer makes one a member of the congregation.
Last Sunday we launched our Simple Gifts Stewardship Drive by reading a very familiar story of the feeding of the five thousand. We reflected upon the idea that simple, even meager gifts, placed in Jesus’ hands, are combined to do amazing and even miraculous things.

The simple gifts we offer are more than just our financial contributions. That’s where our membership vows remind us of our promise to faithfully participate in the ministries of the church. This week, we examine the simple gifts of presence and prayer. Our passage of Scripture is once again a fairly familiar story from the life of Jesus, in the home of Martha and Mary found in Luke 10. I hope you can be with us.

Just a reminder, please bring your “Giving Plan” cards to worship this Sunday if you haven’t already returned yours. Communicating your plan to the church assists the Finance Team to create a balanced budget for the coming year.

Until Sunday,

“Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” – Matthew 19:24
There were many things that Jesus said that were counter-cultural. Throughout our series “Renegade Gospel,” our youth are looking at many of these statements. This week we are going to be talking about one of Jesus’ statements about the rich. In Matthew 19, Jesus tells a rich man that to be perfect he will have to go and sell all of his possessions and give the money to the poor and then ends with the statement about it being easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for the rich to enter Heaven.

Take a moment to dwell on that statement. Our culture places value on our possessions, and we even gain a sense of security by having more and better stuff. Think about all of the things that you have – your house, car, electronics, and so much more. What would it be like to sell all of those things and give the money to the poor?

As our youth look at this passage this week, take some time to think about how your possessions keep you from your relationship with God and commit to getting rid of some of the excess so that others may benefit.

Youth for Christ

YFC’s (Youth for Christ) Mission is to see every young person in every people group in every nation have the opportunity to make an informed decision to become a follower of Jesus Christ and to become a part of a local church. Because the needs and longings of young people are unique to their time, place, and life experience, Youth for Christ always seeks to share the Good News about Jesus in a way that is relevant to them.

YFC reaches young people everywhere, working together with the local church and other like-minded partners to raise up lifelong followers of Jesus who lead by their godliness in lifestyle, devotion to prayer and the Word of God, passion for sharing the love of Christ and commitment to social involvement.

Surviving the Holidays

If you’re feeling lost and hopeless and would rather skip this season altogether after the loss of your loved one, Grief Share’s Surviving the Holidays can help.
This 2-hour event is designed to help you get through this difficult season.
At this event, you’ll:
1. Learn practical tips for navigating this difficult season
2. Hear from others who have made it through the holidays without their loved one
3. Receive a workbook to continue your healing at home

You don’t have to go through the holidays alone. Woodlawn’s Stephen Ministry is hosting a free Surviving the Holidays event on November 7th at 2:00 pm in the
Parlor.

Stop by the Stephen Ministry table on Sunday morning to register, or call the church office.

New - Women's Study Group Began October 12

A new women's group is meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month from 6:30-8:00 pm in room 12E (the Chapel). They began Oct. 12 so you can still join this study. Led by Karen Riggins, the group will read the book, "Twirl," by Patsy Clairmont and discuss the questions at the end of the chapters. All women are invited to bring their quiet busy work (crocheting, knitting, coloring, needlepoint, etc.).  The goal is to just spend time enjoying each other's company and discussing what is read.

Coffee Fellowship Time extended

Mark your Calendar – WUMC Blood Drive, November 13
Right now, the American Red Cross has an emergency blood shortage. The Red Cross national blood inventory is the lowest it’s been at this time of year since 2015, with less than a day’s supply of certain blood types in recent weeks. The Red Cross is working around the clock to meet the blood needs of hospitals and patients – but can’t do it alone. They need your help!

Woodlawn will hold its next blood drive on November 13. We had 32 people signed up to give at the last drive. Thank you to those who gave. Let’s see if we can increase that number. Blood can be given every 56 days (correction from Oct. 3 newsletter).  See the American Red Cross website for more information on giving blood or to sign up for a drive.

Ken Yeoman passed away in the early hours Tuesday, following a heart attack Sunday. Prayers of comfort are asked for wife, Sherree, and their children, Leslie Spiers and Harvey Yeoman, and grandson Shane Spiers. Arrangements for a private family service are being made.

Please hold the Wierwille family in your prayers.  Bob and Elsie’s grandson, Larry Lee Wierwille, passed away unexpectedly this week prior to having heart surgery. Their granddaughter, (Derek Wierwille’s sister) Amy Wierwille is in Kansas Medical Center and is in very serious condition with a virus (non-Covid).  She is on life support.

Joyce & Duane Mikesell ask your continued prayers as Joyce goes in for several test. Please lift prayers that the information they receive is helpful and positive.

Joyce & Duane also ask prayers for Joyce’s brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Pat, as Pat begins chemo treatments.

Janet McElroy requests your prayers for her mother and their family.  Janet’s mother fell in her home 2 weeks ago, and since being in the hospital and a rehab facility, they now have to find and place her in a skilled nursing facility.  She will not be able to return home.  Please lift prayers for the McElroy’s as they have to make many decisions, and for her mother, that she will somehow understand and she will be at peace.

Tammy Cuadra asks your prayers for her son, Chris, and her grandsons for a tough situation they are dealing with.

Tammy Cuadra also asks that you continue to pray for her sister, Andrea, and her family.

Please continue prayers for Sharyon Miller who had back surgery on Monday, October 11. Surgery went well. It was a little more extensive than planned but she came thru it well and will stay in the hospital for a few days. Sharyon said, “Thank you for all the prayers!” Please continue prayers her husband, Jim, as well.

H.D. McCarty was able to return home Oct. 10. Please continue prayers as he begins his recovery.

Don and Kay Layton left for Denver for Kay’s appointment at National Jewish Health. Please pray for their travel and for Kay’s time at NJH over the remainder of this week and next week.

Myrna Perry’s surgery, October 12, to repair her shoulder went well. She was able to return home after surgery. Prayers for recovery are asked.

If you, or someone you know, has a joy, a concern, or just needs prayers, send to main@woodlawnumc.net or call the church office at 788-1507.
