Corsica Currents - October 2021

>From the Commodore

Fall is the perfect time to be on the Corsica and to enjoy Ship Point. In September, we held our Fall Series with Comets racing – two weekends (the third was blown out) and hosted the Penguin Internationals. Ten penguins raced in light conditions on Saturday Sept.18 on the Corsica and in perfect but shifty wind on Chester on Sunday.

Many thanks to club members who made this event a success by serving on the race committee, planning committee, selling tee-shirts, pre-race cleanup and preparation, cooking hamburgers, and special thanks to Michael Cate for providing additional trophies. This regatta was run as a “bronze” level clean regatta – reducing the waste and plastic used at the regatta. I think one junior sailor – serving as crew said it perfectly when she said, “This was the most fun, I’ve ever had sailing”.

Comets race this weekend, currently with 20 entries. Friday’s race will serve as the North Americans while the Internationals will be raced on Saturday and Sunday. If the wind holds as predicted, the finish line may be off the beach, so come out and cheer on our club’s comet racers.

September 23 -Movie Night:  Come out to watch “The Man Who Would Be King” under the stars (really the pavilion). We will gather for hotdogs and hamburgers at 6:30 with the movie beginning around 7:30. Bring your own chair, blanket, bowl for popcorn. The club will provide water, beer, and soft drinks.

September 24 @ 3 PM - Annual Meeting and Oysterfest – Come enjoy oysters and hear about the amazing activities at our club this year. Board members will discuss the state of the club. Election of officers and board members will also occur at the meeting.

>Boat and Vehicle Storage

Our goal for the year is to gain accountability for the club’s assets and ensure that they are maintained. Additionally, we will attempt to get a handle on member assets that are stored on club grounds. It appears that many of the boats and trailers are either abandoned or neglected. This has become a safety issue for the grass cutting crew who must move boats to cut the grass and a health issue for the members writ- large as many of these unattended boats have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

If your boat or trailer is not in good working condition it needs to be attended to. Other vehicles may not be stored on site as per the easement requirements.

Please remove unused trailers, boats, trucks etc. by Nov. 1, 2021, Those derelict trailers and boats not claimed may be removed by the club in November.

>Junior Sailing

Congratulations to the 3 Corsica River Junior Sailors, Jed Cohen, Dorsey Owings, and Eleanor Owings, who participated in CBYRA Junior racing this year. Hopefully more Corsica Junior sailors will join them next year.
