Have you heard about "SCW splitting in two!"
If you’ve heard a rumor about Sun City West being split in two, you can relax. There are no plans to cut our community in half. What you have probably been hearing about is a federally mandated process, required by the U.S. Constitution, to reevaluate America’s Congressional and Legislative districts every 10 years, after the censuses are complete.
Arizona appointed its Independent Redistricting Commission in January of 2021 to adopt new districts to meet this requirement. Proposed new maps have been released. The U.S. Constitution requires that each Congressional district within a state must have as identical a number of people as possible and each legislative district within a state must have close to the same number of people.
Since the 2010 census, Sun City West has been in U.S. Congressional District 8 and State Legislative District 22. Our representatives for US District 8 are Sens. Krysten Sinema and Mark Kelly, and Rep. Debbie Lesko. In State Legislative District 22, our representatives are Sen. David Livingston and Reps. Ben Toma and Frank Carroll.
From the maps the commission has published so far, it appears Sun City West will move from Congressional District 8 to District 9, and will move from Legislative District 22 to Legislative District 29.

Do you have prescriptions that you no longer need? The SCW Posse will be hosting their semi-annual drug take-back event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in front of the SCW Posse headquarters.

No glass, needles or liquids will be accepted. All drugs are disposed of properly by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.

Phase 2 of Kuentz parking lot project delayed
Phase one of the Kuentz Parking Lot/ Asphalt Mill & Replacement Project began on Wednesday, Sept. 15, with favorable soils conditions and was successfully completed on Thursday, Sept. 23, per schedule with immediate transition to phase two beginning in the south parking lot. After removal of the south lot’s old asphalt, it was determined that soil stabilization is a required step prior to the placement of new asphalt and was also impacted by that past weekend’s rain.
RCSCW General Manager and staff have agreed to extend the closure for natural drying and stabilizing to take place in lieu of the high cost of concrete powder soils stabilization process.
The decision to naturally dry the lot's soil prevents approximately $70,000 of additional costs, while requiring 3 to 4 weeks of inconvenient added closure time.
Staff is making efforts to reach out to The Foundation for assistance in additional parking to accommodate Softball and Theatre Events scheduled during this timeframe.

R.H. Johnson Library Homebound Program
“HOME” what a wonderful place to be!
However, some people are homebound and cannot come and go as they once did. Sightseeing, shopping, attending events, and coming to the library are not possible due to their current circumstances.
Recent research reveals that more than 30% of seniors aged 60 and above have disabilities that affect self-care. One of the main goals of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West is to provide quality experiential options to our more than 28,000 residents.
Therefore, the R.H. Johnson Library is offering the “Homebound” program, which provides books, magazines, DVD’s, Blu-Ray’s, and CD’s. to lighten and brighten the days for people who cannot leave their homes.
The program is free to Sun City West residents with valid recreation cards.
You can be on the “Homebound” program for short term for example if you are planning to have surgery and won’t be able to travel to the library during your recovery.
The “Homebound” adventure begins with a phone call to 623-544-6130. After your approved application, choose 5 items which will be delivered to your door by a mail carrier.
When you have finished with the items during the allotted time, you place them in the provided mail bag and return them to the library. Upon receipt of your items, we send the next 5 items you requested.
The United States Postal Service helps make this possible with the “Free Matter” program which provides free mail services for nonprofits who deliver needed matter to people who are audio, visually, and/or physically challenged.
Reader advisor volunteers needed
The library is looking for volunteers to be Reader Advisors one day a week, Wednesday through Friday. Reader Advisors recommend books they have read to residents.  They set up a table with a selection of books they recommend and can talk to residents about the books. The books can be fiction or non-fiction.
Volunteer with the R.H. Johnson library
Do you like volunteering? Working or helping with others?
If you answered yes, then we want you! The R.H. Johnson Library is looking for circulation volunteers and Virtual Reality volunteers. Come join a fun team and play with us.
If interested, pickup an application at the checkout desk. For questions, call Audrey at 623-544-6164.
