Happy Volunteer Managers Day for the 5th!

Tēnā koutou <<First Name>>

Friday the 5th of November is International Volunteer Managers Day.  The theme is What us Excellent - Shape the future of Volunteering. We would love to see photos and do a social media post of how you celebrated!  More information, ideas and resources are available here. I hope you have a wonderful day celebrating your great work in the community.

Also coming up is International Volunteer Day on Sunday 5th December. The theme will be 'Volunteer for our common future.'

Our first Volunteer in Action Promotion has been launched.  There are more tips for managing volunteers, focusing on the 'Let's Talk About Volunteering' webinars from Volunteering NZ.

COVID-19 continues to impact globally, including the volunteer sector. While Nelson Tasman has been relatively COVID-19 free, there could be implications for your volunteer programmes with some people being hesitant to volunteer in new or their regular roles. For more information, please see the Unite again COVID-19 section below.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition of your newsletter!

Feedback on Be Collective

"I highly recommend to other organisations to use Be Collective. We have been able to find the perfect volunteer for us, only few hours after posting our opportunity!  The platform is definitely user friendly and kaimahi at Volunteer Nelson and Be Collective very helpful and supportive. Such a great tool to use for organisation looking for volunteers!"

From the Future of Volunteering (part 1) with Volunteering NZ

Is your organisation experiencing a reluctance in the traditional volunteers to either come back to their roles due to concerns regarding COVID-19?  This reluctance appears to be a trend is many parts of the globe.  While we only experience a relatively short lockdown in Nelson Tasman, there may also be reduced people over 75 years of age who want to get into volunteering, particularly until vaccination rates increase. In the meantime, here are three tips to consider:

1.     Are there opportunities that your current volunteers could do online or               remotely if they don't feel comfortable in regular place they volunteer?
2.     Consider how to attract younger volunteers (under 75's), and                              look for opportunities that people can do from home and that are                        short-term or project based.
3.    Keep your current volunteers informed of your relevant health and safety           updates in regards to COVID-19 guidelines, as they can change rapidly.

Older adult volunteers affected by Covid-19

We know that older people make a significant contribution to our communities through volunteering activities. However, older volunteers and older adults were amongst groups that were significantly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

We've summarised some of key things we know about older adult volunteers.

Dr Solmaz Nazari, Volunteering New Zealand Research Manager, has written a paper: Volunteering in an ageing population: The benefits of volunteering for the well-being of older persons.

We've updated our research page too, with four new pieces of research on wellbeing and older adult volunteers that we have drawn on.
COVID-19 response

Volunteer and Volunteer Organisation guidelines for the COVID-19 alert levels are available on our Covid Response page

Our COVID-19 Actions page has information for different audiences, and about vaccines and volunteers.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

Vaccination certificates will be required for certain roles, including the health and disability sector and education from 1 December 2021.  Please consider this for your volunteers, as well as paid staff, as the laws for Health and Safety are the same for volunteers. There is no clear advice regarding asking for vaccination certificates at present for roles not covered by the mandated roles and organisations but please consider the health and safety of your volunteers, paid staff, clients and visitors.  Read more
