Dispatch from Lake Worth

In which the author offers not one but TWO sales for you, and a chance for us to get together again for Dia de Los Muertos.

Hello My Friends:

John Cutrone here from Convivio Bookworks in Lake Worth, Florida. The news from Lake Worth today is brief: first, at our online shop, take your choice of two sales we are running. Now through Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos), use discount code STREETFAIR at checkout for $10 off your purchase of $75 on everything in the shop, and get free domestic shipping, too! What's new? A big bevy of brand new advent calendars from Germany. Lots of great new hand embroidered tea towels by my mom (Millie's Tea Towels––Mom's been embroidering every day!) plus more tea towels hand printed by the folks at Kei & Molly Textiles in New Mexico (as well as eco-friendly reusable cloth bags and compostable sponges, all with fun Kei & Molly prints). And of course lots of great new artesanías méxicanas for Dia de Los Muertos: Day of the Dead. New Christmas goods from Germany have arrived, and more are on a boat from Sweden, scheduled for arrival soon. Shop here!

Mainly, it is time for our more autumnal offerings, especially our artisan goods from Mexico for Dia de Los Muertos. Last week, my mom and sister and Seth and I packed up the car with plenty of these artesanías méxicanas, along with some treasured mementos and plenty of photographs and an espresso pot and Italian sheet music for songs like a traditional Neopolitan Tarantella and "O Sole Mio." We drove down to the New River Inn in Fort Lauderdale and there, at the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, we built an ofrenda for Day of the Dead to honor our family and to combine our Italian traditions with those from Mexico. It's part of the Florida Day of the Dead celebration that will take place there in Fort Lauderdale on November 2. When we finished, we stood back, looked at it, and I think we all felt the same wash of emotion: it felt right and good to honor all our loved ones who had come and gone... and this is what the Dia de Los Muertos ofrenda tradition is all about. If you'd like some trational artesanías méxicanas for your Day of the Dead altar, and would like to take advantage of our $10 savings offer, shop here! Click on the Dia de Los Muertos link once you're at our online shop.

A few days later, Mom turned 95, and here's the second sale we're offering: just for the next few days, use discount code HAPPYBIRTHDAY at checkout to save $9.50 when you order any four of Millie's Tea Towels, plus get free domestic shipping. Mom embroiders each one by hand, and it's been really wonderful to see her so engaged in a new venture. For years she's been saying, "I wish I had a job." Well, she's created one for herself. She embroiders one towel each day (and we give her the full amount of each sale; she is my mother, after all.) Shop here! Click on the new Linens & Textiles link once you're there.

Finally, an invitation: Locals, you'll find us at our very first in-person event since 2020 on Saturday October 30, when the City of Lake Worth Beach holds its annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration. The main festivities are at Hatch 1121, which is just west of the Florida East Coast Railroad tracks at 1121 Lucerne Avenue. I'm pretty sure the hours are 2 to 9 PM. Music, dancing, all the usual celebration that comes with this beautiful holiday. All particpants must be masked (and we're not talking calavera masks this time around). We'll be there with as many of our traditional artisan goods from Mexico as we can manage to bring. More details in the next Dispatch from Lake Worth... for now, mark your calendars. The jury is still out on whether the celebration in Fort Lauderdale will include vendors, but if it does, we will be set up there, too. That celebration always takes place on the traditional Day of the Dead day: November 2.

That's all the news for today. I told you it was brief.
John
