📰 Will Murphy set aside advertising money for ethnic media in New Jersey?

New York City and California have set aside advertising dollars to specifically spend with ethnic and community media. When will New Jersey do the same?

"I wouldn't necessarily commit, but it's something I would absolutely consider. We do some of this already," said Murphy. "I would be very much open to doing that. It's a smart way to get to people. And frankly, in a more targeted, closer to the ground way than the big, other media players, whether they be print radio, or television or digital."

Murphy's answer came in response to Aleksandra Slabiz of Nowy Dziennik, a Polish-language daily, who asked if New Jersey will follow the example of local and state governments in New York City and California to dedicate substantial advertising and marketing funds to advertising in ethnic and community media.  Such advertising funds could be a huge boon to an estimated 150 local and ethnic media outlets that serve immigrants and communities of color throughout the state.

Slabiz's question was one of five pitched to Murphy during a wide-ranging, 20-minute briefing hosted by the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University, during which  Murphy also discussed plans and budget priorities to address systemic inequalities that impact New Jersey's immigrants and communities of color, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

NJ News Commons Spotlight: Phillip Sungyong Han

Veteran journalist Phillip Sungyong Han of Miju News (Korean Business Journal) has enjoyed a prolific career. But in 2014, amidst shrinking newsrooms in New Jersey and nationwide, Han lost his news director job at a Korean American television station based in Fort Lee, N.J. For a time, he considered leaving journalism for more stable work. That's when the publisher of Miju News reached out with an unexpected opportunity.

In this profile, Anthony Advincula, project coordinator of the Center's ethnic media initiative, interviews Han about his career path and how Miju News thrives while meeting the information needs of New Jersey's growing Korean community.

This article is the first in the series of stories on ethnic media in New Jersey, produced by the Center for Cooperative Media.

🧳 Newsroom moves

In a recent tweet, Rodrigo Torrejon announced his departure from The Star-Ledger and NJ.com: "Some personal news: today was my last day @starledger/@njdotcom and covering New Jersey, the state I was born and raised in. I'm beyond grateful to residents who trusted me with their stories and to my colleagues who work every day to help their communities."

We wish you well, Rodrigo!

👐 Support for our fellow journalists

S.P. Sullivan, a reporter with NJ Advance Media's Statehouse bureau in Trenton, also took to social media with a personal announcement this week, tweeting: "Hi, this is just to say that I've taken a temporary leave from work to deal with some mental health stuff. I'm getting the care and support I need but many people aren't lucky enough to say that and that's why I decided to share this publicly, because it shouldn't be that way!"

We extend our support and best wishes to Sean.

📚 What we're reading

Why Black media matters now
CUNY's Center for Community Media recently published this report about the role of the Black Press over the past 18th months as a COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted Black communities across the US.

"On Mar. 16, 1827, in New York City, a group of free Black men founded Freedom's Journal, the first newspaper owned by, led by and for Black Americans in the United States," writes Cheryl Thompson-Morton, project lead, and director of the Black Media Initiative at Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism's Center for Community Media. "Nearly 200 years later, Black media continue to create a space where Black folks can speak for ourselves about issues of importance and combat stereotypes that harm us."

This week, the CCM hosted the virtual event "Pleading Our Cause and Leading the Way." The discussion featured key survey findings about Black media coverage during the pandemic and racial injustice protests. For instance, Black publications were more likely to center community in their reporting. They also covered racism, health disparities, voting access, and other issues important to Black communities, six times as often as mainstream media outlets.

Labor-management hostility erupts in Gannett newsrooms
Axios.com reports that the NewsGuild of New York has filed unfair labor practice charges against Gannett, the nation's largest local media company. According to current employees, Gannett has tried to undermine unionization efforts "via alleged threats to pay increases, 401(k) matches, and diversity initiatives." Since February, about a dozen Gannett newsrooms, including three in New Jersey, have voted to or indicated plans to unionize. NOTE: You can learn about newsroom unionization efforts in our state during the Center for Cooperative Media's NJ Local News Summit.

How to track the impact of solutions journalism
The Solutions Journalism Network has published a guide for tracking the impact of a solutions-focused collaborative journalism project. This resource maps out metric-tracking strategies such as how to identify a collaborative's key priority areas and help members "develop new knowledge, ownership and skills"
