Andy completes marathon challenge despite injury setbacks


Huge congratulations and admiration go to Golborne's Andy Smullen, who last weekend completed the gruelling London Marathon - despite being struck down by injury in the days beforehand.

Back problems meant Andy could barely even walk in the days before the big race. But sheer determination sent him to the start line - and against the odds he completed the 26.2 mile course to raise funds for a cause very close to his heart.

Home care company marks 11th birthday

 
Congratulations to Bridgewater Home Care, which is marking 11 years since its founding. 

The company is a specialist provider of companionship-focussed domiciliary care, which supports older people and vulnerable adults locally to live independently at home.

The company weren't able to mark their 10th anniversary last year due to COVID restrictions, so having worked right through the pandemic we hope they really enjoy their belated celebrations!

What's on in Lowton and Golborne?

Come and see what our local U3A group have to offer at an open day being held next Friday, 15 October, 2021 from 1-3pm.

U3A provide educational, recreational and leisure activities for retired and semi-retired people or anyone who is no longer in full time employment.They have around 30 different interest groups that you could join, run from their base in Leigh. Members from Lowton and Golborne are more than welcome and no particular experience or qualifications are required.

Gardening tip of the week:

Mulch, mulch, mulch!
If you’re removing faded annuals and digging up perennials to overwinter, your borders will be looking a little more bare this month. Once you’ve tidied them apply a generous amount of mulch – simply this means something like bark chips, well rotted manure, leaf mould or spent mushroom compost. You can even add spent compost from containers. This will help insulate the roots of the plants which remain against the winter cold and will prevent excessive weed growth.
