4 things Seattle is talking about
🐳 A beluga whale spotted in Puget Sound has been cause for excitement and concern. The Arctic whale hasn’t been seen in Washington state since 1940, and since the closest beluga population is at least 1,400 miles away, some researchers have expressed worry about the creature. Groups like Orca Network are asking people to not seek out the whale and cause it any stress. However, if you do happen to see it, you can report the whale’s location by calling 1-866-ORCANET. 🍪 Michael Pinckney had a pretty sweet transition from tech to cookies. After working for Microsoft and seeing how much people seemed to love his pastries, Pinckney launched Pinckney Cookie Cafe in 2009. Customers can choose from flavors like Ginger Molasses, Brown Butter Brown Sugar Bourbon Spice, and Dark Chocolate Espresso. Early on in the pandemic, he decided to donate $5 from every order of a dozen cookies to charities working on COVID-19 relief efforts; he's since raised more than $15,000. You can try the cookies for yourself by visiting locations at the University District, West Seattle, and Ballard markets. (The Seattle Times)
🌈 Did you miss this year’s earlier Pride celebrations? Not to fear, there’s another one happening this weekend. Seattle Pride’s All Together Now event is set for tomorrow at Volunteer Park; there’ll be music, “Drag Queen Bingo,” and food. There will also be a booth where you can record your coming out story which may be selected to air on C89.5 FM in honor of National Coming Out Day next Monday, Oct. 11. (Seattle Pride)
🇬🇧 Ever wondered why the heck there’s an English telephone booth in Madison Park? Well, you can thank Cornelia Carre and her husband Serge, two Brits who fell in love with the area and decided to move to the neighborhood. The couple moved back to London, but left behind the telephone booth where it remains today and will for the foreseeable future. (Seattle Met)
